Chapter 10: The Unopened File

The silence at the gates of the Sanctuary lasted only a few heartbeats. Then the red text on the darkened screens vanished, replaced by the normal, peaceful landscape images of the retreat. The main gate whirred open.

Megan’s face, usually composed, now looked like a mask of frozen fury. Her jaw worked, but no sound came out.

Julian, still pale, took a step back from her. His eyes darted from me to the now-open gates, then back to his wife’s face.

I walked past them without a word, my muddy boots tracking dirt onto the pristine marble. The security guards, who had just been holding my arms, stood frozen, their eyes wide and unsure. They didn’t move to stop me.

As I entered the main courtyard, the usual morning calm was absent. Whispers followed me. A few early rising followers stared, their faces a mix of confusion and fear. I could feel Megan’s furious gaze burning into my back.

I knew this wasn’t over. Her silence at the gate wasn’t surrender; it was a re-calibration.

I found refuge in the small, rarely-used maintenance cottage at the far edge of the grounds. It was dusty, smelling of oil and old wood, but it was hidden. I cleaned my head wound as best I could with some tap water and a torn shirt.

The sun was barely up when the first notifications began to flood the Sanctuary’s private internal social platform. My name, Abigail Halloway, was suddenly everywhere.

“Urgent Security Alert!” flashed across the screens of phones and tablets held by every follower.

The post, attributed to “Sanctuary Administration,” featured a heavily edited security video. It showed a figure, me, stumbling through the gates. But the footage cut out the moment I scanned my badge.

Instead, it spliced in clips of me, covered in mud and blood, appearing to lunge aggressively at the security guards. My frantic movements, my desperate attempt to be heard, were twisted into an attack.

The accompanying text was even worse. “A radicalized, unhinged individual, Abigail Halloway, previously estranged from our peaceful community, attempted a violent incursion this morning.”

It painted me as delusional, having suffered a “mental breakdown” that led to a “violent apostate” attack on “dedicated staff.” It said I had been “safely contained” and “relocated to a secure medical facility” for my own good.

They were already calling local news outlets. I saw mentions of “alleged cult attack” popping up on regional news feeds. Megan hadn’t just denied me access; she was dismantling my credibility.

She wanted to make sure that even if I tried to explain the founder’s badge, no one would believe a word I said. I was to be a madwoman, a danger.

A knock came at the cottage door. My body tensed.

“Abigail? Are you in there?” It was Thomas Kincaid, the chief groundskeeper. His voice was hushed, urgent.

I opened the door a crack. He looked haggard, his usually neatly combed hair disheveled.

“They’re saying terrible things about you,” he whispered, glancing over his shoulder. “Megan’s got everyone convinced you’re… unwell. They even broadcast it on the morning news channel, WNYT.”

“I know,” I said, my voice hoarse. “Did you see the video?”

He nodded slowly. “It’s not what happened. You didn’t attack anyone.”

“She edited it. She’s twisting everything.” I clenched my fist. “She knows the badge means something. She just needs to make sure no one trusts me enough to listen.”

Thomas wrung his hands. “What are you going to do? No one will stand up to her. Not now.”

His words confirmed my fears. Megan’s strategy was clear: discredit, isolate, then conquer. She wasn’t just trying to throw me out; she was trying to erase me from the Sanctuary’s history. My survival was an inconvenience, one she planned to bury under a mountain of lies.
