Chapter 10: The Unopened File

The emergency lockdown trapped everyone inside the central assembly hall. I stayed hidden, watching the chaos unfold. The news helicopters continued to circle, their presence a constant, deafening reminder of the external pressure.

Inside the hall, Megan addressed the terrified congregation. Her voice, amplified by the sound system, tried to project an image of calm authority. She called the police and media “persecutors” and “outsiders trying to sow discord.”

She commanded everyone to stay put, to trust her leadership, to pray for “deliverance from this baseless assault.” Her words rang hollow against the backdrop of sirens and rotor blades.

I knew her words were a diversion. She had a more urgent task at hand.

As midnight approached, I slipped out from my hiding place. I made my way to the administration building, moving with utmost caution. The building was mostly dark, but a sliver of light escaped from Megan’s office.

I crept to a glass-paneled door, peering inside.

Megan was there, alone, bathed in the eerie blue glow of a computer screen. She was frantically hunched over the main server terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard.

She wore a headset, barking frantic instructions into it. “Wipe it! All of it! Every last file, every transaction, every encrypted log!”

Her face was contorted in a desperate grimace. She was trying to execute a manual purge of the central server hard drives. She wanted to erase all financial traces of her kickbacks with Victor Pryce, the falsified deeds, everything that could link her to the fraud and the attempted murder.

She believed she could destroy the evidence. What she didn’t know was that my initial badge scan, days ago, had initiated a delayed cloud mirroring protocol. Every encrypted log, every change she made, was already being broadcast directly to state authorities the second Megan touched the server terminal.

As I watched her panicked movements, I noticed something else. Outside the glass doors, in the dimly lit hallway, figures were gathering.

The senior cult elders. Dozens of long-time followers. They stood in total silence, a hushed, unmoving crowd. Their faces were impassive, showing no emotion, no support, no condemnation.

They simply watched Megan through the glass. Watched her desperate, futile attempt to erase the truth.

The state troopers had secured the outer perimeter, their flashlights sweeping through the grounds. The air outside crackled with expectation.

Megan, completely absorbed in her task, seemed oblivious to the silent audience just beyond her office door. She gritted her teeth, hitting ‘enter’ with a final, desperate slam of her palm.

A chilling thought occurred to me. She probably thought she had won, that she had eliminated all evidence. But she was merely confirming her own destruction. The stage was set.
