The last of the followers had exited the assembly hall, leaving Megan standing on the stage, utterly alone, her chest heaving. The microphones still picked up the faint, hollow sound of her ragged breathing.

The heavy doors at the back of the auditorium, where I still stood, swung open. Three Ulster County sheriff deputies walked in, their boots making soft thuds on the carpeted aisle.

They moved with purpose, their faces grim. They didn’t speak.

They walked directly up the center aisle, past the rows of empty chairs, past the silent stage. Two deputies flanked Megan, their presence suddenly dwarfing her.

The third deputy walked to the edge of the stage, then stepped up, approaching Julian Halloway, who had been sitting in the front row, cowering, trying to make himself invisible.

“Megan Halloway,” one of the deputies stated, his voice calm and firm, “you are under arrest for attempted murder and grand larceny.”

He held out a pair of handcuffs. Megan stared at them, then at the deputy, her face a mask of disbelief and pure, unadulterated hatred. Her eyes darted to me at the back of the room.

Her mouth opened, as if to scream, but no sound emerged. She clamped it shut. She would not give me the satisfaction of a verbal defeat.

The cold metal clicked around her wrists. She didn’t resist physically, but her gaze, burning with a silent fury, never left mine. It promised retribution, a threat that lingered in the now-empty air.

“Julian Halloway,” the third deputy said, placing handcuffs on my cousin’s wrists. Julian looked up, his eyes wide with terror, then sank back into his chair, utterly defeated.

“You are also under arrest, in connection with these charges.”

Julian offered no resistance, no words, just a whimper. He looked small and pathetic, a shadow of the man Megan had tried to make him.

The deputies escorted Megan and Julian off the stage, down the aisle, and out of the assembly hall. Megan kept her back straight, her head held high, refusing to let her shame show, but her silence was more damning than any confession. She never uttered a single phrase, not to the deputies, not to me.

As they passed through the doors, a flash of red and blue lights outside illuminated their departure. The news helicopters were still hovering, their cameras undoubtedly capturing every moment.

The Sanctuary, once a bustling hub of faith and ambition, was now eerily quiet. The sounds of sirens and distant police radios were the only things breaking the silence.

Meanwhile, somewhere across the county, Victor Pryce, the corrupt appraiser, had seen the news. Reports later confirmed he had slipped out a back service road from his office, his white sedan disappearing into the predawn darkness, fleeing across state lines, a desperate attempt to outrun the consequences of his greed. He was gone, for now.

The immediate threat was contained. Megan and Julian were in custody. The Sanctuary was safe, but I knew, deep down, this wasn’t the end of the story.
