Chapter 2: The War Begins

#content-1

The first whispers reached me through a series of frantic texts from Olivia, my best friend. My phone buzzed on my nightstand before I even opened my eyes, a cascade of emojis and all-caps messages. “OMG Eliza, have you seen what Eleanor is saying?” “She’s literally telling everyone you’re unstable!” “What is going on?”

My stomach dropped. I scrolled through the group chat, a knot forming in my chest. Eleanor, my grandmother, had wasted no time. She was painting me as erratic, irresponsible, someone struggling with the pressures of society. The carefully curated world of the Beaumonts, a world of old money and rigid expectations, was already turning against me.

I tried to call Olivia back, but before my finger could connect, my phone rang again. It was Eleanor. Her name, a stark white against the dark screen, felt like a judgment. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart.

“Eliza, darling,” her voice was like ice, polished and sharp. “I trust you’ve seen the unfortunate buzz circulating this morning.”

I gripped the phone tighter. “Unfortunate buzz? You’re slandering me, Grandmother.”

A cold laugh, devoid of humor, echoed through the receiver. “Slandering? I’m merely expressing my ‘concerns’ about your recent, shall we say, rebellious streak. It appears your judgment is severely compromised.”

“My judgment is fine,” I retorted, my voice trembling slightly despite my best efforts. “I made a promise to Daniel.”

“And that promise, dear Eliza, has consequences.” Her tone shifted, becoming flat, bureaucratic. “I’ve instructed the family accountants to freeze your college trust fund, effective immediately. Consider it a necessary measure to prevent further imprudent decisions on your part.”

My breath caught in my throat. The trust fund was my future, my independence. Without it, my plans for college, for anything beyond Eleanor’s reach, dissolved into thin air.

“You can’t do that!” I gasped, the words barely forming.

“Oh, but I assure you, I can,” she purred, a dark satisfaction in her voice. “And there’s another matter. That ‘special fund’ Catherine mentioned for Daniel? It, too, has been put on hold. Your actions have demonstrated a clear disregard for family decorum, and I simply cannot risk those resources being squandered on frivolous pursuits.”

My blood ran cold. This wasn’t just about me anymore. This was about Daniel. Eleanor wasn’t just taking away my future; she was taking away his stability, his sense of security. The “special fund” was all he had, a lifeline Catherine had only hinted at with such dread.

“You can’t touch Daniel’s fund!” I pleaded, desperation creeping into my voice. “That has nothing to do with me!”

“Everything in this family has to do with the Beaumont name, Eliza,” she said, her voice rising slightly, her patience clearly wearing thin. “And your recent behavior is tarnishing it. Daniel needs stability, not misguided sentimentality. His funds are tied to certain family agreements, and your defiance puts all of that at risk. Think very carefully about the path you are choosing.”

The line clicked dead. I stared at my phone, the silence ringing in my ears. The world outside my window, usually bustling with the sounds of our affluent neighborhood, felt distant, muffled. My hands were shaking. Eleanor hadn’t just threatened; she had acted. She had stripped me of my financial independence and, worse, she had directly targeted Daniel.

I stumbled out of bed, pulling on the first clothes I could find. I needed to see Daniel, to tell him everything would be okay, even though I had no idea how I would make it so. As I hurried down the grand staircase, the walls of the mansion, usually a comforting embrace of family history, now felt like the cold, hard bars of a gilded cage. Every portrait seemed to stare down at me with Eleanor’s disapproving eyes.

My phone vibrated again. It was Olivia. I answered, my voice tight. “Hey.”

“Eliza, are you okay? My mom just got off the phone with Mrs. Henderson. Eleanor’s telling everyone you’ve had a ‘nervous breakdown’ and that’s why you can’t go to prom with Daniel. She’s painting you as a tragic figure, but it’s all so manipulative.” Olivia’s voice was full of genuine worry.

“She froze my trust fund, Olivia,” I whispered, the words heavy in the air. “And she cut off Daniel’s access to his special fund. The one Catherine told me about.”

A stunned silence on the other end. “She did what? Eliza, that’s… that’s horrible. What are you going to do?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted, a wave of despair washing over me. “I feel so exposed. Everyone’s already avoiding me. I saw a few of them on the texts. They believe her.”

“Of course they do,” Olivia said, her voice grim. “Eleanor has everyone wrapped around her little finger. She controls everything in this town, especially the social scene. People are scared of her, Eliza. They’re scared to cross her.”

She was right. Already, I felt the chilling effect of Eleanor’s power. My phone, usually alight with invitations and gossip, had been eerily quiet after Olivia’s initial texts. The few replies I’d received from other friends were cagey, filled with vague apologies about being busy, or outright ignored my pleas for support. It was a swift and brutal social execution.

“I tried to tell them she’s lying, that she’s just doing this because she doesn’t want Daniel at prom,” I said, a bitter taste in my mouth. “But they just sent back a bunch of ‘Oh, Eliza, maybe you should rest’ messages. Or nothing at all.”

“They’re too invested in their own perfect lives, Eliza,” Olivia said gently. “Eleanor represents stability, connections. You, right now, represent chaos in their eyes. You’re challenging the matriarch. That’s a huge no-no in their world.”

I could almost see the perfectly coiffed women, with their impeccably dressed husbands, nodding gravely at Eleanor’s fabricated tales, sipping their morning coffee in their equally grand homes. Eleanor knew exactly how to wield her influence, how to turn an entire community against anyone who dared defy her carefully constructed image.

A new fear, cold and sharp, pierced through me. What if she succeeded? What if everyone believed her? What if Daniel and I were truly isolated, left to fend for ourselves against her relentless machinations? The thought of Daniel, so trusting and gentle, caught in the crossfire of Eleanor’s cruelty, made my chest ache with a fierce, protective anger.

“I can’t let her do this to Daniel, Olivia,” I said, my voice hardening with resolve. “I just can’t. This isn’t just about prom anymore. This is about his life.”

“I know, Eliza,” Olivia replied, her voice filled with a quiet understanding. “But be careful. Eleanor plays dirty. She’s just shown you how far she’s willing to go. You’re going to need to be smart about this.”

I thanked Olivia, the call ending with a promise to talk more later. As I descended the final steps into the echoing silence of the main hall, I felt the full weight of my situation. I was alone, financially cut off, socially ostracized, and my grandmother had just made it clear she would weaponize Daniel’s vulnerability to get her way. The battle lines were drawn. And it was going to be a brutal fight. My fear for Daniel, however, only fueled my determination. I would protect him, no matter the cost to myself.
