Chapter 3: B: Basement Break-in

#content-1

👉 [Previous Decision]: You chose Option B – Break into the basement late at night alone.

The old brownstone settled into silence after midnight, a heavy blanket of quiet. I waited until I heard Marcus Pendelton’s truck pull away from the back alley, his shift as building manager apparently over.

I slipped out of my studio, a small flashlight clutched in my hand. The basement door was at the back of the ground floor, usually kept locked. Tonight, I found it ajar, a sliver of darkness beckoning. A stroke of luck, or a trap? My stomach tightened.

The stairs creaked under my weight as I descended into the musty darkness. The air grew colder, thicker with the smell of damp earth and old machinery. My flashlight beam cut through cobwebs, revealing forgotten tools, stacked boxes, and the skeletal remains of what looked like an ancient boiler system.

I moved deeper, searching for a sign, anything that could link this place to the recording. A sudden clang echoed from the far end of the basement. My breath caught in my throat.

“Looking for something, Mr. Kross?” a voice, sharp and cold, cut through the darkness.

The flashlight beam from behind me pinned me against a wall of decaying boxes. Marcus Pendelton stood there, a heavy wrench in his hand, his face unreadable in the dim light. He hadn’t left after all.

“Just… checking the furnace,” I mumbled, my heart hammering.

He stepped closer, his eyes hard. “Trespassing, breaking and entering. That’s a serious offense in this city, especially when you’re caught snooping around my family’s property.”

Before I could speak, his phone was already pressed to his ear. “Sheriff Thaddeus? Yes, it’s Marcus. I’ve got an intruder down in the brownstone basement. Our new tenant. You might want to send someone over.”

A cold wave washed over me. My notes, my equipment, my entire investigation — all confined to my studio, now completely out of reach. I was alone, caught, and silenced.
