👉 Previous Decision: You chose to decode your pocket note and met Dr. O’Reilly, learning about acoustic memory suppression.
The air inside AetherTech felt different now, heavy with invisible sound waves. The knowledge from Dr. O’Reilly was a live wire in my brain, buzzing beneath the surface. I walked past the usual security checkpoint, forcing my posture to be neutral, my gaze blank. I was just another engineer, reporting for another memory-wiped shift.
Marcus caught me by the coffee station. His eyes, usually sharp and calculating, now held a glint of something almost… satisfied. He wanted to see me broken.
“Arthur,” he said, his voice smooth. “Glad to see you’re adjusting.”
I nodded, keeping my hands still. “The work is complex. Demanding.”
He chuckled, a dry sound. “Indeed. But your performance hasn’t flagged. In fact, it’s been exemplary.” He paused, sipping his coffee. “We’re expanding the Sub-Level 4 operations. The mainframes require constant oversight, beyond what mere guards can provide.”
My pulse quickened. Sub-Level 4. Where the memory suppression grid was strongest. Where the real work, and the real secrets, were hidden.
“I need someone I can trust implicitly,” Marcus continued, his eyes piercing mine. “Someone with your expertise. A floor supervisor position.”
The offer hung in the air, a poisoned chalice. It was a test of my obedience, a way for him to keep me closer, under his thumb. But it was also my only way in.
“That’s a significant responsibility, Marcus,” I said, meeting his gaze evenly. “And more hours.”
He waved a dismissive hand. “The compensation would reflect it. And, of course, a new access card. Unrestricted passage across all general operational zones, excluding the primary vault. That remains under my direct control.”
The vault. That was the ultimate prize. But a supervisor role would give me unparalleled access to the surrounding areas, the peripheral systems. It would also give me an excuse to be present during the crucial moments.
“I accept,” I said, my voice steady. “I’m committed to AetherTech.”
Marcus’s lips stretched into a thin smile. “Excellent, Arthur. I knew you’d see reason.” He clapped me on the shoulder, a gesture that felt more like possession than camaraderie. “The new card will be waiting for you by end of day. You start tomorrow.”
The fake smile on my face felt like a mask, glued tight. This was it. The first step into the lion’s den.
