My Son Smashed My Late Wife's Birdhouse to Hide an Old Iron Key, But What Was Behind the Sealed Boiler Door Destroyed My Entire Life
The screen door rattled shut behind me, the sound echoing through the quiet afternoon. I was still wrestling with the image of Evelyn’s stamp, the way it branded the sealing of Sub-Basement B, when a county sheriff’s cruiser pulled into my gravel driveway.
Deputy Sarah Jenkins stepped out, her uniform crisp, her face unreadable. She was younger than Lucas, but carried herself with an authority that belied her years. I knew her from around town. She’d always been a straight shooter.
“Mr. Finch,” she said, her voice even. “I’m here regarding a welfare check. A concern was raised.”
My blood ran cold. Lucas. He was moving fast.
“A concern?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. “Who raised it?”
She consulted a pad in her hand. “Your son, Lucas Finch. He filed an emergency petition for an eldercare evaluation.”
My hands curled into fists, hidden in the pockets of my jeans. “Eldercare? I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself.”
“He cited… erratic behavior, memory lapses, and an incident involving property damage,” she continued, not meeting my eyes directly. “He also provided documentation of a substantial deposit. Two hundred and twenty thousand dollars, I believe, into an escrow account.”
My jaw tightened. “Two hundred and twenty thousand dollars?” That was Lucas’s entire life savings. He wasn’t just concerned; he was desperate.
“It’s allocated to secure a seventy-two-hour observation hold at the Crestview Memory Care Facility, pending a full psychiatric evaluation.” Sarah looked up then, her eyes full of a reluctant pity. “It’s a standard procedure, Mr. Finch. I have to request you come with me.”
I felt a sudden, dizzying panic. Seventy-two hours. Four days until the elementary school demolition. This wasn’t about my health. It was about locking me away, removing me from Crestview before I could get back into that basement. Before I could understand Evelyn’s involvement.
“This is a setup,” I said, my voice rising. “Lucas is trying to stop me from finding something in the old school. Something he doesn’t want anyone to see.”
Sarah’s expression hardened slightly. “Mr. Finch, I understand this is distressing. But I have orders. Your son presented compelling evidence.”
“What evidence?” I demanded. “That video of me walking in my yard? He faked that.”
She sighed, a small puff of air. “He showed me security footage, Mr. Finch. Of you… damaging property.” She paused. “He also has a signed medical affidavit from Dr. Albright, your family physician, detailing recent concerns.”
Dr. Albright? My old doctor? This was deeper than I thought. Lucas had covered every angle. He was using my own community, my own doctor, against me.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I stated, backing away from the door. “Not until I understand why my wife’s stamp is on the order to seal the school basement.”
Sarah took a step forward, her hand resting lightly on the service weapon at her hip. It wasn’t a threat, but a clear signal of her authority.
“Mr. Finch, if you resist, I’ll have to use force. It’ll only make things worse for your evaluation.”
I could see the concern in her eyes, mixed with a resolve to do her job. Lucas hadn’t just secured a spot for me; he was leveraging the entire town’s legal system. The walls of Crestview were closing in, and I knew if I went with her, I might never get out to finish what I had started.
