Chapter 12: Building Again

The hallway felt longer than usual as I walked away from Mr. Higgins, the crumpled papers still in my hand. My mind was racing, trying to figure out how to counter Kendra’s latest maneuver. I needed proof, and I needed it fast.

Just as I reached the elevator, a voice called out, “Marcus Blevins? Mind if I grab a moment?”

I turned to see Malik Pryor, a local independent journalist, standing by the community bulletin board. He was a familiar face, often seen around the neighborhood with his camera and notepad, working on his “Oakwood Roots” project. He was always digging into old building records, local history, forgotten stories.

“Malik,” I greeted, forcing a smile I didn’t feel. “What can I do for you?”

He had a thick manila folder tucked under his arm. “Just finished an interview with Mrs. Johnson on the third floor. She had some fascinating insights about the 2012 renovation. Speaking of which, I found something interesting in the archives the other day that might relate to your building.”

He pulled out a photocopied document from his folder. It was a scanned image of an old handwritten ledger, a faded receipt attached to it. The paper felt brittle, almost ancient.

“I was looking into the original ownership transfers after the 2012 renovation,” Malik explained, his eyes bright with his usual archival enthusiasm. “Specifically, trying to track down some of the smaller storage unit leases that got shuffled around.”

He pointed to a specific entry on the ledger. “See here? This is a record of all the units and their verified owners from 2014, after the dust settled. I noticed your ex, Kendra, made some claims in a recent community meeting about her late uncle having owned a sub-basement storage locker.”

My breath hitched. Kendra’s uncle. The hidden key. This had to be connected.

“Yes,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “He did. Or, she claims he did.”

Malik shook his head, a wry smile touching his lips. “Well, according to the official building records, verified by the city, her uncle never owned anything in this complex. Not a storage unit, not a boiler room locker, nothing.”

He tapped the receipt attached to the ledger. “In fact, this is an original cash receipt from that year. It shows a ‘Kendra Gaines’ paid the annual fee for a general tenant locker, not ‘Sub-B. Boiler 4.’ And it’s clearly for her personal use, not her uncle’s estate.”

A chill ran down my spine, replacing the heat of my earlier anger. The information hit me like a physical blow. Twist 4.

“What?” I asked, my voice hoarse. “But she just told Mr. Higgins her uncle owned an asset in the building, and that I’m trying to steal his inheritance.”

Malik leaned closer, his expression serious. “Marcus, this ledger is the definitive record. Your ex-partner’s uncle’s name doesn’t appear anywhere on the 2014 ownership manifest. If her uncle had any claim to a unit or asset, it was never officially registered. And this receipt for a general locker is clearly for Kendra, signed by her.”

He looked at me, a flicker of understanding in his eyes. “It looks like Kendra forged past documentation to create fake debt claims against you, all tied to something that never truly existed for her family.”

He handed me the copies. “I keep meticulous records for my project. You’re welcome to these. Might come in handy.”

I stared at the papers, the ink on the ledger blurring slightly. Kendra wasn’t just lying; she was building an entire fictional history, fabricating claims based on non-existent assets. Her entire narrative about my supposed debt and her uncle’s inheritance was a house of cards. The rusted key in my pocket suddenly felt heavier, a tangible link to a truth Kendra desperately wanted to keep buried.
