Chapter 10: Two Decades Later

The smell of stale coffee hung in the air of my kitchen as Mark and I stared at the blurry security footage on my laptop screen. It was late, past midnight, the only sound the hum of the refrigerator.

Mark zoomed in, pausing the video. It showed the main hallway outside the locker rooms, about an hour after practice on the day the receipts were found.

“There,” Mark said, pointing a finger at the screen. “Brock Croft.”

Brock, arrogant even in grainy black and white, sauntered down the hall. He wasn’t wearing his usual backpack. Instead, he carried his varsity football jacket slung over one arm.

As he reached his own locker, he made a subtle movement, one I almost missed. He glanced around quickly, then reached a hand inside the thick, padded lining of his jacket.

He pulled out something small, obscured by his hand, and tucked it into his locker before shutting it with a soft click.

“What was that?” I asked, leaning closer. The video quality wasn’t good enough to make out any specifics.

Mark rewound, played it again, then slowed it down to almost frame-by-frame. “It’s too quick, but look at the jacket itself. See how it bulges, even when he’s just carrying it? That’s not normal for a varsity jacket. They’re usually more form-fitting.”

He was right. Brock’s jacket looked unusually stiff and thick, almost rigid in places. It wasn’t just padded for warmth; it seemed to hold a structure of its own.

“It’s custom,” Mark mused, his brow furrowed in concentration. “High-end, probably. Coach Croft spares no expense for his golden boy.”

He replayed the footage of Brock again. “My guess? Croft’s using his son as a mobile safe. A pocket, probably sewn into the lining, specifically designed to carry things without being obvious.”

My mind raced. What could be so important, so illicit, that it needed to be carried around in a custom-made jacket by the coach’s son?

“Off-the-books booster payments,” Mark said, voicing my unspoken thought. “And likely other things. Forged safety waivers, maybe even those fake theft receipts for Toby.”

The pieces clicked into place. Coach Croft wasn’t just covering up. He was running a full-blown shadow operation. He trusted Brock, his own son, with the physical evidence.

“So, Brock planted those receipts in Toby’s locker,” I said, the realization cold and hard. “Under his father’s direction.”

Mark nodded, his gaze still fixed on the screen. “It’s the most logical explanation. Croft orchestrates the audit through Karen, who’s an unwitting accomplice, then has Brock slip the evidence into Toby’s locker when no one’s looking.”

“And it would have been so easy to do,” I realized. Toby often left his locker slightly ajar during practice, rushing to drumline.

The shock of the setup resonated with me, but it also fueled a burning resolve. This wasn’t just about clearing Toby’s name; it was about exposing an entire system of corruption.

“We need proof,” I said, looking away from the screen, my eyes meeting Mark’s. “Physical proof. Not just blurry footage. Something that screams undeniable guilt.”

Mark leaned back, running a hand through his hair. “Getting that jacket, or what’s inside it, won’t be easy. Brock won’t just hand it over.”

“No,” I agreed, a plan already beginning to form in my mind. “But he’s arrogant. And his father is arrogant. They believe they’re untouchable.”

I thought of Toby, facing expulsion, his future threatened. I thought of the bruises, the rigged helmet.

We needed to find that physical document. Something inside that padded jacket that would prove beyond a doubt that Toby was framed.

“The expulsion hearing is in three days,” I reminded Mark. “We don’t have much time.”

Mark’s gaze hardened. “Then we make every second count. We find a way to expose what’s hidden inside that jacket.”
