Chapter 10: Two Decades Later

The drumline’s fanfare swelled, washing over the stadium. It was my cue.

I started walking, each step deliberate, away from Mark and the safety of the stadium entrance. The crowd was focused on Coach Croft, still basking in the glow of his award, but I could feel eyes turning as I made my way onto the field.

The cameras were still rolling, focused on Croft. He didn’t notice me at first. Neither did Principal Gable.

I marched straight towards the 50-yard line, the short, green blades of artificial turf crunching under my shoes. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat matching the one Toby played.

Croft’s eyes finally found me. His victorious smile vanished, replaced by a scowl. Gable looked startled, his hand reaching out as if to stop me telepathically.

“Coach Croft!” I called out, my voice clear and strong, cutting through the celebratory music. “We need to talk about Toby Jenkins!”

The cameras swiveled. The local news reporter, mid-sentence about school spirit, froze, her microphone pointed now at me.

Croft’s face contorted with rage. “Ms. Jenkins! You are suspended! Get off this field immediately!”

“Not until you address the forged documents that framed my son for theft!” I shot back, ignoring his warning. “Not until you explain where the $85,000 for helmet safety went!”

A murmur rippled through the stands. The festive mood began to crack.

Brock, seeing his father’s public humiliation, took a furious step forward. He moved with the raw, unthinking aggression of a pampered bully.

“Leave my dad alone, you crazy lady!” he snarled, planting himself directly in front of Croft, blocking my path.

I kept walking. “Your father covered up Toby’s injury. He used you to plant evidence!”

Brock’s eyes narrowed, his face reddening. His father’s anger had always been his permission slip. He puffed out his chest, stepping even closer, invading my space.

“I said, back off!” he yelled, and with a sudden, forceful thrust, he shoved me hard.

It was an aggressive, unexpected blow. I stumbled backward, arms flailing, my balance gone. My hand shot out, desperate for purchase, and instinctively grabbed the closest thing to me: the thick, heavy lapel of Brock’s custom varsity jacket.

There was a sudden, sharp ripping sound. The elaborate, custom stitching of the jacket’s inner lining, designed to conceal its contents, gave way with the force of my grab.

My hand pulled free, but the tear in the lining was unmistakable. A cascade of objects, thick and bundled, spilled from the ruptured pocket.

They tumbled onto the pristine green turf, scattering in a dramatic arc.

First, a thick stack of checks. Uncashed, many bearing the handwritten signature of Booster Club members, made out to “Croft Performance Athletics LLC.” The $85,000 in diverted funds, laid bare.

Then, a sheaf of official-looking papers. Concussion liability waivers, but clearly altered, with crucial clauses about independent medical review scratched out or whited-out and initialed with sloppy, fake handwriting.

Finally, several crisp, new receipts. The exact $1,200 worth of athletic gear receipts that had been mysteriously found in Toby’s locker.

The items landed directly in front of the local news cameras, which were still broadcasting live. The cameramen, alerted by the commotion, reacted instantly.

One camera, then another, zoomed in. The lenses focused, perfectly framing the incriminating documents against the vibrant green of the turf.

The uncashed checks, the altered waivers, the forged theft slips. All caught on live broadcast television, for the entire state to see.

Silence descended on the stadium, thick and absolute, broken only by the frantic whispers of the news anchors on the broadcast, describing what was unfolding.

Croft’s jaw dropped. Principal Gable’s face drained of all color. Brock stood frozen, staring at the evidence now strewn at his feet, his custom jacket hanging open like a gaping wound.

My eyes met Mark’s across the field. He gave a single, firm nod.

The truth, in its rawest, most undeniable form, was finally out.
