Chapter 13: A Quiet Morning in Pasadena

The pending system freeze on Richard’s booking, initiated by Arthur, started to register at the airport’s gate desk. Marcus Lindqvist, the Gate Operations Manager, saw the flashing red alert on his screen—a hold on a high-value charter package, flagged by the charter company itself. He initiated a standard inquiry, delaying the final boarding.

Richard, still preening, noticed the delay. He saw Marcus tapping furiously at his keyboard, a small, worried frown on his face.

“Is there a problem, officer?” Richard called out, trying to sound jovial, though a flicker of unease crossed his features.

Marcus looked up, his expression unreadable. “Sir, your reservation is currently showing a pending system freeze. We’re awaiting clarification from Davies Executive Travel.”

Richard’s face tightened. A system freeze? He’d expected Eleanor to simply slink away. Panic, cold and sudden, squeezed his chest. This wasn’t part of his plan. He had been so sure of my passivity.

Within minutes of his party being held at the gate, Richard was on his phone, barking orders into the receiver. He paced back and forth, his face reddening as he spoke to his aggressive personal attorney, a man known for his bulldog tactics.

Two hours later, a sharp rap echoed through my quiet apartment. I opened the door to find a stoic courier holding a thick envelope, its contents emblazoned with an intimidating legal firm’s letterhead.

The documents inside were overwhelming. A formal cease-and-desist letter, stiff and unyielding, accused me of “intentional disruption of family travel.” It demanded a staggering $50,000 for damages, an amount plucked from thin air to intimidate.

It threatened immediate asset freezing, a grim warning that my savings could be tied up in legal limbo if I dared to “touch the booking.”

My hands trembled slightly as I held the papers. Richard, through his lawyer, was playing hardball. The sheer audacity, the legal jargon, the implied threat – it sent a flash of anxiety through me. I imagined myself in a courtroom, fighting against his aggressive tactics, my retirement savings at risk.

Just as the weight of the legal offensive threatened to crush me, another knock sounded at my door. This time, when I opened it, Arthur stood there.

He held a paper bag that smelled faintly of cinnamon and roasted coffee beans. A warm, reassuring smile touched his lips.

“I thought you might need this,” he said, holding up a cup of my favorite almond latte. “And perhaps a bit of company.”

He saw the thick envelope clutched in my hand, the stark white paper a stark contrast to my pale knuckles. His smile softened, understanding dawning in his eyes.

“Let’s see what our friend Richard has cooked up now, shall we?” he murmured, stepping into my apartment, a calm presence in the storm.
