Chapter 12: The Soundstage of Silence

The silence in the house, once a comfort, now felt like a shroud. Arthur had confirmed my worst fears; the forged deed was a masterstroke of deceit, a digital signature so convincing it had slipped past initial automated checks.

My next moves were swift and decisive. I logged into my primary banking portal, my hands steady despite the tremor in my chest. The joint accounts Julian and Beatrice had access to, the ones meant for their “allowances” and “career development,” were my first target.

I froze every credit card associated with them. Then, I revoked Julian’s monthly studio allowance, a generous $15,000 I’d been sending him for years for his “television development projects” that never materialized. The click of the mouse was profoundly satisfying.

Next, I called Arthur back. “Put the Malibu estate on the market,” I told him, my voice flat. “Immediately. All-cash buyer. I don’t care about the price being top-dollar. I need it gone, fast.”

Arthur didn’t argue. He knew the stakes. Within hours, my $8 million sanctuary was discreetly listed, a ghost among the other luxury properties.

Two days later, the phone rang, a frantic, unfamiliar international number flashing on the screen. It was Julian.

“Eleanor! What in God’s name is going on?” His voice was tinny, distorted by the satellite connection, but thick with panic.

I took a deep breath. “To what do I owe this distressed call, Julian?” I asked, my voice calm, almost serene.

“My cards are declined! All of them! Beatrice can’t even buy a souvenir, let alone pay for the spa! What have you done?”

“I’ve simply… tidied up my finances,” I replied, a small smile playing on my lips. “Considering you’re no longer in need of my support.”

A beat of stunned silence, then his voice dropped, laced with a sickly sweetness that made my skin crawl. “Eleanor, darling, we need to talk about your memory again.”

“Oh?” I prompted, leaning back in my chair.

“Remember last winter? After your fall? You had that… episode,” he continued, his tone thick with false concern. “You were quite disoriented. We had a long conversation about future planning. You signed documents, giving Beatrice and me access. You wanted us to have the house.”

My grip tightened on the phone. “A stroke-like episode?” I said, recalling Arthur’s earlier query about the deed’s date. “And I voluntarily signed away half my house?”

“Exactly!” he chirped, regaining some of his composure. “You were so keen for us to have a stake, to start our own legacy. You insisted. Don’t you recall, Eleanor? It was right after Christmas, when the jacaranda trees were still blooming early.”

I closed my eyes. Jacaranda trees bloomed in late spring, not winter. His lie was clumsy, but his conviction was chilling. He was building an entire false narrative.

“Julian,” I said, my voice cutting through his charade. “I recall everything with perfect clarity. And I didn’t fall. And the jacaranda trees were dormant.”

A harsh laugh crackled through the line. “Eleanor, please. This is exactly what I was talking about. This erratic behavior. You need help.”

I hung up. The frantic ringing started again almost immediately, but I let it go to voicemail. Julian thought he was building a case for my incompetence. He didn’t realize he was building a case against himself.
