Marcus Croft’s revelation hung in the air, a chilling confirmation of the depths Julian and Beatrice had sunk to. My personal betrayal was tangled in a much larger, more professional fraud.

“I have something you might be interested in, Mr. Croft,” I said, my voice gaining a new resolve. “Something that connects Julian’s financial misdeeds directly to a plan to… sideline me, permanently.”

We arranged to meet the next morning at a quiet, unassuming café in West Hollywood, far from the usual paparazzi haunts. Marcus Croft was younger than I expected, sharp eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, a notebook already open on the table.

I handed him a printout of the recovered text messages. He read through them quickly, his expression hardening with each line.

“This is explosive, Ms. Delacroix,” he said, looking up, his voice low. “This confirms everything my sources have been hinting at. The dummy corporations, the asset transfers, the gaslighting attempts… it’s all here.”

“His ‘production company’ was a front,” I explained, gesturing at the printout. “He used it to siphon money, mine and likely the studio’s. The cruise was just the opportune moment to move funds and solidify his claim on my estate.”

Marcus nodded, tapping a finger on a particular line about “my contact” for the digital signature. “This is huge. My investigation found a series of suspicious transfers from Julian’s shell company accounts to a single, anonymous offshore entity, just before the cruise departed. Your texts tie it all together.”

“What about that digital signature?” I pressed. “He mentioned a ‘contact’ who could get it for him.”

Marcus leaned forward. “My sources also mentioned Julian had a former associate, a financial consultant named Evelyn Hayes, who helped set up some of his earlier, shadier corporate structures. She disappeared from the scene a few months ago after a falling out, supposedly over Julian’s increasing recklessness.”

“A falling out?” I questioned. “Could she be the ‘contact’?”

“Possibly,” Marcus replied. “She was known for being meticulous. If she was involved, she might have left a paper trail. I’ve been trying to track her, and I found something curious.”

He pulled out a printed bank statement, circling a small entry. “A safety deposit box. Registered under a shell company, a different one from Julian’s, but with an address in Burbank. The rental payments are made anonymously, but the pattern of deposits matches her usual handling of sensitive documents.”

He slid the paper across the table. The name of the shell company, “Silver Screen Holdings LLC,” was subtly ironic, given its likely purpose.

“A deposit box?” I mused aloud. “Why would she put anything in a box for a shell company if she’d had a falling out?”

“Leverage,” Marcus said simply. “Or insurance. People like Julian don’t make enemies quietly. She might have prepared for this. She might have left something incriminating in there, something that protects her if Julian ever tried to implicate her, or worse.”

A shiver ran down my spine. The pieces were finally locking into place, forming a complete picture of Julian’s calculated treachery. The safety deposit box, registered under a shell company in Burbank, was a beacon of hope in the dark labyrinth of their fraud.
