My drive home was a blur of flashing lights and racing thoughts. The arsenic discovery erased every lingering doubt about Eleanor’s villainy; a far more insidious evil had wormed its way into our lives. I pulled into our driveway at exactly 7:00 PM, the setting sun casting long, ominous shadows across the manicured lawn.

As I fumbled with my keys, I noticed something odd. The garage door, usually closed, was partially ajar. A low murmur of voices drifted from inside.

I pushed the door open to find Julian, my husband, amidst a scene of frantic disarray. Plastic storage totes, the kind I used for my baking equipment, were stacked haphazardly. My measuring cups, spatulas, and whisks were being hastily tossed inside.

He looked up, startled, a fine sheen of sweat on his forehead. “Maya? What are you doing here?” he asked, his voice strained.

“What are *you* doing?” I countered, my eyes scanning the chaos. He was wearing his expensive cashmere sweater, now smudged with flour.

“I’m protecting you,” he said, gesturing vaguely at the piles of equipment. “Eleanor’s lawyers. They’re ruthless. They’ll search everything. I’m just tidying up, getting rid of anything suspicious. You know, given your… history.”

He tried to smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. His gaze flickered to a stack of my custom silicone baking liners, neatly folded, sitting on a workbench. These were the liners I’d used that morning for the cobbler.

“Don’t touch those,” I snapped, moving instinctively toward them.

Julian moved faster, his body blocking my path. “No, no, darling. I’ll handle everything. Just let me deal with it. You’ve been through enough.”

He picked up the liners, a slight tremor in his hand, and tucked them into a plain brown box.

“Those are important,” I insisted, my voice rising. “I need to check them.”

“Check them for what?” he asked, his tone suddenly sharp. He looked at me, a strange intensity in his eyes. “You think you’re going to find something Eleanor planted? She’s a monster, Maya, but she’s not a fool. Anything incriminating will be long gone.”

He slammed the lid on the box.

The way he dismissed my concern, the way he rushed to hide those specific liners, sent a cold shard of suspicion through me. This wasn’t Julian protecting me. This was Julian *hiding* something. His “protection” felt like an attempt to control the narrative, to remove potential evidence.

My mind replayed the scene at the hospital, the bright Prussian blue of the arsenic test. Was it possible Julian knew? Was he helping Eleanor? Or was there something far more sinister at play?

“I just need to make sure everything’s accounted for,” I said, trying to keep my voice even, fighting the urge to snatch the box from his hands. “Before anyone else gets here.”

Julian closed the last tote with a click. “Don’t worry,” he said, patting my shoulder. His touch felt distant, alien. “I’ve handled it. Everything’s under control.”

But as he swept the remaining flour into a dustpan, I couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling that control was exactly what he was after, and I was losing it.
