The hospital room felt heavy with the unspoken accusation hanging in the air. Callahan’s message had confirmed my worst fears: this wasn’t an accident, or even just Elena’s opportunism. Someone had *planned* to remove evidence.

“Marco,” Callahan said, his voice quiet over the phone, cutting through the beeping of Mia’s heart monitor. “Name of a catering waiter. Young kid, clean record. He was the one who delivered Mia’s dessert plate.”

I leaned closer to the phone, careful not to disturb Mia. “What about him?”

“He says Elena approached him directly,” Callahan explained. “Told him there was a ‘special dietary request’ for a walnut-free parfait. She pointed out Mia’s plate, then pointed to another identical plate with a tiny sticker underneath, claiming it was the ‘special’ one for Mia.”

A sick feeling churned in my gut. Elena had used a simple, everyday request to orchestrate the switch.

“He just swapped them out,” Callahan continued. “Thought he was doing a good deed, making sure a child with an allergy got the right food. Elena even tipped him fifty dollars for his ‘diligence.’ Said he felt good about it.”

A rush of red-hot fury surged through me. She’d used an innocent kid, a basic human kindness, to poison her own stepdaughter. The image of Elena’s calm, composed face at the gala, her social smile fixed in place, burned in my mind. She had been playing the concerned host while planning this cold, calculated attack.

“He saw what was on the original plate?” I asked, my voice tight.

“He remembers a distinct walnut-peanut mousse. She made it sound like Mia was allergic to walnuts, which is true, but the peanuts were the real weapon.”

The silence on the line was deafening. Mia’s peanut allergy was severe, life-threatening. Walnuts were a concern, but peanuts meant a trip to the ER, every single time. Elena knew this better than anyone. She had been in every emergency room visit with us.

“Did he remember anything else?” I pressed.

“Just that Elena seemed very specific about which plate was which,” Callahan said. “Almost overly so. He thought it was just her being particular about a high-profile guest.”

I closed my eyes, picturing the scene: Elena, elegant and poised, casually directing a young, unsuspecting waiter to swap out my daughter’s food. The thought made my hands clench into fists.

Callahan cleared his throat. “So, we’ve got a planted plate, a manipulated waiter, and the surveillance footage conveniently gone. This isn’t just a grab for the trust, Julian. This is attempted murder, framed as negligence.”

“I know,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. My mind raced, trying to connect the dots. Elena wanted the trust, but why go this far? Why risk Mia’s life? Mateo had to be involved. He was always reckless, always had gambling debts.

“What’s next, Julian?” Callahan asked, pulling me back to the present. “We need to hit them where it hurts. The money. The trust.”

The $3,000,000 trust. It was clean money, set aside by my father years ago, meant for Mia’s future, managed by Arthur Pendelton, the syndicate’s long-time accountant. A cold dread seeped into my bones. Pendelton was meticulous, but also notoriously corruptible. If Elena and Mateo had his backing, this would be far more complicated than I first imagined.
