Former Mob Enforcer Protects His Anaphylactic Daughter After His Wife and Brother Stage a $3,000,000 Gala Poisoning to Frame Him for Negligence and Seize Control of the Syndicate Trust
“You’re making a grave mistake, Julian,” Elena said, her voice a low, cold hum against the sterile hospital silence. She stood by the door, arms crossed, not even looking at Mia’s fragile form.
My jaw clenched, the tremor starting in my hands. “I won’t sign anything.”
“Then Child Protective Services will be here by morning. They’ll see your ‘negligence,’ Julian. Your past won’t protect you this time.”
She turned, her heels clicking softly as she walked out, leaving behind the faint scent of expensive perfume that suddenly made my stomach churn.
I waited until the door latched shut. My breath caught in my throat, a sharp, ragged sound. Mia lay motionless, pale against the crisp white sheets, the rhythmic beep of monitors filling the room. Her chest rose and fell with a shallow, almost invisible movement.
The phone felt heavy in my hand as I scrolled to Mark Callahan’s number. He was the only one I trusted, a former mob-unit detective who knew the twisted underbelly of this city better than anyone.
He picked up on the second ring, his voice gruff. “Julian? What’s going on?”
“Mia,” I whispered, the word raw. “Anaphylactic shock. Someone poisoned her at the gala. Elena… she wants custody, the trust. She’s saying I was negligent.”
A long silence stretched between us, punctuated only by the hospital’s mechanical hum.
“Get to the gala venue, Mark,” I said, keeping my voice low, my eyes fixed on Mia. “I need all security footage, particularly around the catering and dessert tables. Find out who handled the food.”
“You got it, boss. Stay with your girl.”
I disconnected, placing the phone face down on the small table next to Mia’s bed. The weight in my chest didn’t ease. The fluorescent lights hummed, casting a pallor over everything, making the vibrant flowers on the bedside table look dull and lifeless.
A few hours later, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from Callahan. I picked it up with a knot forming in my stomach.
*Callahan:* “Security feeds for the main ballroom and kitchen access are ‘corrupted’ for the 7:45 to 8:15 PM window. Convenient, isn’t it?”
My knuckles whitened around the phone. It wasn’t just a simple mistake; it was planned. Someone had gone out of their way to cover their tracks, to erase any evidence. The confirmation of foul play, concrete and immediate, sent a cold shiver down my spine, solidifying the sickening truth I already suspected.
This wasn’t an accident. This was a deliberate attempt to destroy me and steal Mia’s future.
