Chapter 12: Epilogue: The Harbor Sunset

The estate library was a cavernous room, usually reserved for quiet contemplation, but tonight it hummed with a tension that made the air thick and heavy. The old DeLuca family portraits, their eyes seeming to follow every movement, added to the oppressive atmosphere.

Nonna Sofia sat at the head of the long, polished oak table, her presence commanding absolute silence. Beside her sat two senior family elders, their faces carved with years of unspoken wisdom and authority. Across from them were Mateo, his usual swagger replaced by a nervous fidgeting; Elena, rigid and pale, her eyes darting between me and Nonna Sofia; and Arthur Pendelton, looking surprisingly calm, a thin smile playing on his lips.

I sat at the far end, Callahan beside me, a silent, watchful presence. My gaze fell on Elena. She still hadn’t met my eyes, her focus fixed on the antique rug beneath her feet.

“We are here tonight,” Nonna Sofia began, her voice clear and strong, “to address a grave matter that threatens the honor and stability of our family. A betrayal of the deepest kind.”

Mateo shifted in his seat. Elena gripped the edge of the table. Pendelton remained impassive.

Nonna Sofia then laid out the affidavit she had prepared weeks ago. “Arthur Pendelton, you approached me to discuss Mia DeLuca’s trust. You asked about guardianship clauses. You assured Mateo that you could bypass existing protocols with my ‘verbal consent’.”

Pendelton’s calm façade cracked slightly. “Nonna, I was merely exploring options, as per your estate planning needs.”

“And you accepted 150,000 dollars from Mateo to ‘adjust’ the trust in Elena’s favor, upon Julian’s ‘negligent incapacitation’?” Nonna Sofia’s eyes, sharp as a hawk’s, bore into him. She then played the audio recording, her phone connected to a small speaker. Pendelton’s voice, Mateo’s snickering, filled the room.

Mateo’s face flushed crimson. Pendelton stammered, his earlier composure completely gone. The elders exchanged grave, knowing glances.

“But the betrayal goes deeper,” Nonna Sofia continued, her gaze now sweeping over Mateo and Elena. “Mia DeLuca, an innocent child, was poisoned at the gala. Her life placed in mortal peril.”

Elena’s head snapped up, her eyes finally locking with mine. A flicker of fear, or perhaps desperation, crossed her face.

“Julian,” Nonna Sofia gestured to me. “Present your evidence.”

I took out my phone. The room held its breath. I played Mia’s video.

The shaky footage filled the silence: the bustling dressing room, Mia trying to record herself, and then, the crucial reflection. Elena, quick and furtive, removing the EpiPen from Mia’s handbag. Mateo, stepping in to distract the nurse. The orange barrel, clearly visible, before it vanished into Elena’s coat.

The video ended. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by Elena’s sharp, sudden intake of breath. Her face, which had been pale, now flushed a mottled red. She tried to speak, but no words came out.

Mateo slumped in his chair, his eyes wide with disbelief. Pendelton looked as though he’d seen a ghost. The elders’ faces were grim, their expressions hardened into stone.

Nonna Sofia’s voice cut through the stillness, cold and unforgiving. “Elena, you actively disarmed a child, knowing the danger. Mateo, you orchestrated this with Pendelton, for your gambling debts. You both conspired to frame Julian and steal Mia’s inheritance, almost killing her in the process.”

The accusation hung heavy, irrefutable. Twist 1, the unwitting waiter, was only part of the puzzle. This tribunal now had all the pieces, laid bare. The family, the very foundation of their power, was witnessing their treachery.
