The freeze order felt like a physical weight. Weeks, maybe months, of waiting for the court to sort it out was not an option. Marcus was buying time, and I needed to understand why Harold Hobbs, a low-level probate examiner, had suddenly become such a critical cog in Marcus’s machine.

I spent the next two mornings at the county probate court building downtown, a drab concrete structure that smelled faintly of stale coffee and old paper. I sat in the public waiting area, nursing cups of weak coffee, hoping to catch a glimpse of Harold Hobbs, or perhaps find a way to access public records related to his work. My efforts were fruitless.

On the third day, I decided to take a break. I walked a few blocks to a busy diner, a place popular with county workers, to grab a late lunch. The clatter of plates and muffled conversations filled the air. I slid into a booth, ordering a tuna melt and a glass of iced tea.

As I waited, a woman approached my table. She was dressed in smart business attire, a stack of folders clutched to her chest. Her eyes, darting and anxious, seemed to recognize me.

“Arthur Finch?” she asked, her voice barely above the din.

I looked up, surprised. “Yes?”

“My name is Chloe Zhang,” she said, her gaze sweeping around the diner. “I work for Marcus Kincaid. His personal archivist and assistant.”

My shoulders tensed. Marcus’s assistant? This felt like a trap.

Chloe’s hands tightened on the folders. She seemed to read the suspicion in my eyes.

“I know this looks bad,” she whispered, leaning slightly closer. “But I have information. About Marcus. About Harold Hobbs.”

She glanced over her shoulder again. Her face was pale, a thin sheen of sweat on her forehead despite the diner’s air conditioning.

“I can’t talk here,” Chloe continued, her voice urgent. “Marcus is ruthless. He’s destroying lives, and I can’t be a part of it anymore.”

She pointed with her chin towards the street outside. “My car’s parked around the corner, a silver Prius. Ten minutes. Just listen.”

My mind raced. Was this a setup? A clever ploy by Marcus to gather more ‘evidence’ against me? Or was Chloe genuinely risking her career, perhaps even her safety, to help? Her anxious demeanor felt authentic, but Marcus was a master manipulator. The opportunity for real information, though, was too tempting to ignore.
