Chapter 13: The Following Sunday (Resolution / Epilogue)

I locked myself in my home studio, the restraining order spread across my desk like a grim map of Evelyn’s latest offensive. Surrender my devices? Not a chance. My children’s safety, and my own integrity, depended on what was hidden within them.

Claire Dupont’s encrypted voice message was still open on my primary workstation. The grandfather clock’s tick, the background hum of Evelyn’s private study, those were just the surface. What if there was more?

I re-ran the audio through my forensic acoustic software, pushing the spectral analysis to its limits. I filtered out the general room tone, focusing on minute frequency shifts, faint echoes, anything that didn’t belong. This was my expertise, my quiet revenge.

Hours blurred into a focused blur of sound waves and algorithms. My eyes burned, but I kept going, chasing phantom signals, amplifying the almost imperceptible.

Then, there it was.

A faint, almost completely suppressed whisper, buried deep in the lower register. It lasted for only four seconds, almost completely masked by the ticking clock and Claire’s “distress” breathing. But my software, honed by years of isolating dialogue from bomb squad recordings and disaster sites, found it.

I isolated the fragment, cleaned it, amplified it. The words were indistinct at first, a mumble, but with a slight adjustment to the pitch and a final round of spectral de-noising, Claire’s voice became clear.

“…we’ll make sure she gets it,” she said, followed by a deeper, masculine murmur. “Right. Exactly six seconds before you hit record.”

My blood ran cold. Claire hadn’t been a captive victim, whispering a frantic SOS from behind a locked door. She had been conversing casually with Andrew. Andrew Kensington. Just moments before she started her staged “plea for help.”

The realization hit me like a physical blow. Claire wasn’t being coerced. She wasn’t a pawn. She was an active participant. Or, even worse, she was the master, pulling strings I hadn’t even perceived. The sweet, scared bride-to-be, begging for help, was a carefully constructed facade.

She had intentionally sent me a file designed to be analyzed by a forensic audio engineer, knowing I would find the staged element, knowing I would connect the location to Evelyn’s study. This wasn’t a desperate cry for rescue. It was a meticulously crafted breadcrumb, laid out precisely for me to follow.

The implications spun my head. If Claire and Andrew were working together, what was their game? Why use me? Or was Claire playing a game even Andrew wasn’t fully aware of? The simple narrative of me helping a damsel in distress shattered into a complex web of deceit, far more intricate than just Evelyn’s lies.

You were born broken and left him empty-handed, so don't bring your bastard charity cases to my son's wedding.
