Chapter 14: The Wind on Platform 4

The next morning, the local high-society papers arrived, not on the polished silver tray as usual, but crumpled at the foot of the servants’ quarters door. My hands shook as I unfolded the top sheet.

The headline screamed in bold, black letters: “Montgomery Scion’s Marriage Rocks Elite Enclave: Unhinged Fortune Hunter Blamed in Bizarre Ritual.”

A grainy photograph of me, taken years ago at a charity gala, was splashed across the front page, my smile twisted by the cheap ink into something sinister. The article, clearly leaked by Evelyn Davenport’s network, painted me as an opportunistic outsider, a working-class academic who had married into wealth only to bring her “unstable” family to sabotage the Montgomery legacy.

It spoke of “troubling signs” from my mother, “erratic behavior,” and hinted at a long history of mental instability being “covered up” by me. Julian’s “heroic sacrifice” in resigning his commission was highlighted, framed as a noble act to protect his family’s name from my scandalous influence.

My mother stared at the paper, her lower lip trembling. “They’re saying I’m… insane.”

“They’re lying, Mama,” I said, crumpling the paper in my fist. The cheap newsprint left black smudges on my skin, like ashes.

Later that day, Julian summoned me to the main study. He sat behind his ornate desk, a copy of the same newspaper spread before him. His face was pale, drawn, not with concern for us, but with sheer panic.

“This is unbearable, Eleanor,” he said, his voice low and tight. “My family’s name. After generations of honor, reduced to this.”

He tapped the paper. “They’re calling you a fortune hunter. Saying you’ve orchestrated all of this to gain control.”

“And you believe them?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm despite the tremor in my hands.

He hesitated, then looked away. “I believe the scandal must end. Now.”

Silas Pemberton stood beside him, a smug, satisfied smirk playing on his lips. He carried another folder, thinner this time.

“Evelyn Davenport has offered a solution, Major,” Pemberton said smoothly. “Given the public outcry and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Mrs. Winslow, she has offered to acquire the twelve disputed acres immediately. A quiet, private sale.”

He slid a document across the desk. It was a purchase agreement for the twelve acres, at a price that I knew, from Thomas’s research, was significantly below market value. A paltry sum for land that had been in Julian’s family for over a century.

“This will help stabilize the estate, Major Montgomery,” Pemberton pressed. “It will show decisiveness. End the speculation about family instability and land disputes.”

Julian didn’t even look at me. His gaze was fixed on the pen in Pemberton’s hand.

“The terms are generous, considering the damage that’s been done,” Julian murmured. He picked up the pen. “Just sign here.”

He was going to do it. He was going to sell the land, the land that Evelyn had orchestrated all this chaos to get, and he was going to blame me for it. He would sacrifice his family’s actual assets, and my mother’s reputation, just to stem the flow of gossip.

“Julian, no!” I pleaded, stepping forward. “Don’t you see? This is exactly what she wants! She’s manipulating you!”

He finally looked at me, his eyes cold. “What I see, Eleanor, is a legacy being dragged through the mud. And you, and your mother, are at the center of it. This sale is the only way to salvage what little remains.”

He dipped the pen, his signature already forming. It was happening. Evelyn was winning. And Julian was handing her the victory.
