The news spread like wildfire through the enclave. Before the sun had fully set on my day of renunciation, a convoy of dark, official-looking sedans arrived at the Montgomery estate. Representatives from the national trust bank, their faces grim and unsmiling, entered the grand hall.

Julian, still reeling from my act, stood frozen as a stern-faced woman in a navy suit addressed him.

“Major Montgomery,” she stated, her voice devoid of warmth, “by operation of General Arthur Montgomery’s 1888 Codicil, Clause 14B, your family’s trust has been irrevocably liquidated.”

Julian swayed, bracing himself against the doorframe. “Liquidated? But… the funds. They’re still ours, aren’t they?”

“No, Major,” another representative, a man with a clipped mustache, interjected. “The terms are explicit. The entire thirty-five million dollars, along with all assets tied to the trust—including this estate and the disputed border land—have been transferred to the National Veterans’ Relief Fund.”

My jaw tightened. Thirty-five million dollars, gone. The vast wealth Julian had so fiercely protected, the wealth he’d sacrificed my mother’s dignity and his own integrity for, now belonged to a charity.

“The estate itself will be placed under federal preservation for eventual auction, to benefit the fund,” the woman continued. “We are here to begin the inventory and transition process.”

Julian’s face went from pale to ashen. He looked at me, then back at the bank representatives, a desperate scramble for understanding in his eyes.

“But… but Eleanor, she signed away everything!” he blurted, pointing at me. “She gets nothing!”

“Correct, Major,” the woman said, consulting a tablet. “Mrs. Montgomery’s act of renunciation triggered the clause. She gains no financial benefit from this action. Her claim to the trust, like yours, is now forfeit.”

It was the ultimate irony. Julian, who had obsessed over wealth and social standing, was now utterly destitute. His military career gone, his family fortune vaporized, his home confiscated. All because he valued prestige over truth. All because I chose dignity over his gold.

He stared at the blank faces of the bank representatives, then at me. The silence in the hall was deafening, broken only by the soft click of cameras from the small group of reporters who had somehow gathered outside the estate gates.

“This can’t be happening,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking. “My family’s legacy… destroyed.”

He crumpled to the floor, his hands covering his face. The $35 million was gone. The grand estate, the symbol of his power, was no longer his. He had lost everything, not to me, but to the very protective clause his ancestor had written, a clause designed to punish men exactly like him.
