Adopted Son Talks to "Headless Man" at 3 AM — Morning After, My Face Is Cut From Every Photo in the House
👉 Previous Decision: You followed the return protocol.
The Delaware County jail cell smelled of stale disinfectant and old regrets. I watched through the thick, reinforced glass of the consultation room. Julian Driscoll, a man I’d never seen before, stood beside Karen Gable from St. Jude’s. He had a smug, almost imperceptible smirk as he scribbled his signature across a stack of official custody transfer documents.
Jonah was there, a small figure, his hand held firmly by a woman in a dark suit. He didn’t look back as they led him out to a waiting black SUV. The windows were heavily tinted, obscuring any glimpse of the world within. He was gone, swallowed by a system I hadn’t even known existed until it was too late.
My public defender, a weary woman named Ms. Henderson, slid a legal notice across the table. “$150,000 bail, Mr. Finch. And the court has frozen all your personal and corporate accounts pending a civil competency hearing. Your adoption has been officially revoked, of course.”
My breath caught. “Frozen? On what grounds?”
“The anonymous call, combined with the administrative claim of ‘unsafe environment’ by St. Jude’s after you attempted to return him. It’s enough for an emergency motion.” She adjusted her glasses. “Without independent evidence to counter their claims, you’re at a significant disadvantage.”
My hands clenched, resting on the cold metal table. I had believed I was acting logically, making a safe choice. Instead, I’d delivered Jonah directly into the hands of the predators. I had failed him. Without a single shot fired, the system had consumed both of us, leaving me powerless and alone.
