Adopted Son Talks to "Headless Man" at 3 AM — Morning After, My Face Is Cut From Every Photo in the House

I spent the rest of the day fortifying the homestead alone. Motion-activated floodlights went up, casting stark pools of white across the yard. Acoustic tripwires, rigged to emit a low-frequency alert only I could hear, crisscrossed the tree line. I reinforced window frames and checked every deadbolt. I was a fortress.
At 1:00 AM, the heavens opened. Rain lashed against the house, and the wind howled. Then, with a sudden, sickening surge, the lights flickered and died. The primary generator, usually a reliable rumble, sputtered once, then silenced.
I rushed to the detached shed where the generator sat. The fuel tank cap was slightly ajar. A quick sniff confirmed it: a faint, sweet odor beneath the gasoline. Sugar. Someone had breached my outer defenses while I was inside, monitoring Jonah.
My heart pounded. They were closer than I thought.
A rock crashed through the kitchen window, shattering glass across the floor. My hand went to my sidearm. Wrapped around the rock was a notice from the Delaware County Building Department: “Notice of Intent to Inspect – Unapproved Structures and Safety Violations. Scheduled for sunrise.”
They weren’t just attacking physically; they were using bureaucracy as a weapon. Stripping my power, cutting my utilities, and now threatening my home itself. I knew I was running out of time, and alone, my options were dwindling fast.
