My hands tightened around Ruth’s ledger, the leather cover suddenly feeling like a live wire.

“Mob?” I breathed, my eyes wide as I looked at Marcus. “Eleanor is involved with the mob?”

Ruth nodded, a single tear tracing a path down her wrinkled cheek. “She got into some bad debts, years ago. Gambling, I heard. Julian’s real mother tried to cover for her, but Eleanor just dug herself deeper. She’s been mortgaging the company’s assets, selling off shares to them piece by piece.”

The implication hit me like a physical blow. Eleanor wasn’t just trying to seize a $45 million company; she was feeding it to a criminal syndicate, using my daughter as leverage. The illegal dumping Marcus was investigating suddenly made a terrifying sort of sense. Quick cash, no questions asked.

“This changes everything,” Marcus said, his voice grim. “This isn’t just corporate fraud anymore. This is racketeering, embezzlement, maybe even money laundering.”

“We need to get this to the authorities,” I urged, my mind racing. “But how do we get out? The house is locked down.”

“The family is gathered in the grand parlor,” Ruth whispered. “Eleanor is holding court, playing the grieving matriarch. They’re all waiting for you to sign those papers.”

A plan began to form, desperate and dangerous. The ledgers were concrete proof. If I could expose Eleanor’s ties to the mob, perhaps it would unravel her entire scheme. It was a risky move, confronting her directly, but it was the only way to turn the tables before the divorce papers were signed.

“Come on,” I said to Marcus, holding the ledger tight. “We’re going to the parlor.”

We left Ruth in the conservatory, promising to return for her, and carefully retraced our steps through the east wing. As we neared the main section of the manor, the air grew noticeably colder. Not just the damp chill of the neglected wing, but an unnatural, piercing cold that made my teeth ache.

A low, mournful sigh seemed to ripple through the very walls.

We reached the entrance to the grand parlor, its heavy double doors slightly ajar. Through the crack, I could see Julian’s uncles, stiff in their suits, and various Pendelton cousins. Eleanor sat regally in a velvet armchair, a cold smile on her face. Julian stood awkwardly beside her, fidgeting with a loose cufflink.

I pushed the doors open, stepping into the room with Marcus just behind me.

Every head snapped towards us. A gasp went through the room. Eleanor’s smile vanished, replaced by a look of pure fury.

“Elena!” Julian cried, a mix of terror and relief on his face.

Just then, the massive crystal chandelier above flickered wildly. One bulb popped with a sharp crack, plunging a corner of the room into darkness. The grand grandfather clock in the hall began to chime thirteen times, its heavy bongs echoing unnaturally.

A gust of icy wind swept through the parlor, even though all windows were sealed. It ruffled the heavy drapes and sent a porcelain figurine crashing to the marble floor.

Julian let out a guttural cry. His eyes were wide, fixed on something I couldn’t see, an unseen horror that made his skin go ashen. He stumbled backward, knocking over a side table, sending a vase of fresh roses tumbling.

“No, no, not again!” he whimpered, fear contorting his face.

He didn’t look at Eleanor, or me, or even the shattered porcelain. His gaze was fixed on empty air, his body trembling uncontrollably. Then, like a man possessed, he bolted. He didn’t run towards his mother, or the front door. He fled in the opposite direction, scrambling toward the far end of the hall, toward his private study.

The spectral manifestation, the Lady of Pendelton, was here. And she had Julian.
