Chapter 12: The Next Morning’s Peace

My heart pounded with a mix of dread and exhilaration. Don Vinnie Castaglione’s enforcers were on their way. The thought of confronting Eleanor with mobsters at her heels was terrifying, but it was also the only way to ensure her total downfall.

Marcus tucked his phone away, a resolute look on his face. “We go in together, Elena. You present the confession, and I’ll be here as a witness, and to ensure things stay… civil, relatively speaking.”

“Civil?” I scoffed, a dry laugh escaping my lips. “With the mob involved?”

“As civil as it gets,” he conceded. “But you’re safe. You’re exposing someone who stole from them. You’re giving them what they want.”

We made our way towards the formal signing room, a grand, intimidating space where major family decisions were usually formalized. The air thickened with tension as we approached. I could hear hushed voices, the clink of glass, the rustle of papers.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself. My daughter’s future, my mother’s legacy, all hinged on the next few minutes.

We pushed open the heavy oak doors.

The room was filled with Pendelton relatives, a grim assembly in their Sunday best, gathered around a large, ornate table. Eleanor sat at the head, a smug, satisfied smirk playing on her lips. Julian sat opposite her, his face pale and drawn, but with a flicker of his old arrogance returning, now that the immediate spectral threat had receded.

A stern-faced lawyer sat ready, his pen hovering over a stack of documents. The divorce papers, the custody agreements, the corporate transfer forms.

“Ah, Elena,” Eleanor purred, her eyes glittering with malice. “Just in time. We were about to finalize everything.”

Julian looked up, avoiding my gaze, but a fleeting expression of relief crossed his face when he saw Marcus. He clearly didn’t understand the true gravity of what was about to unfold.

“I believe there are a few additional documents that need to be considered,” I said, my voice steady, surprising myself with its calm.

Eleanor’s smirk tightened. “There’s nothing else to discuss, dear. Just sign.”

The lawyer cleared his throat, pushing a pristine pen towards Julian. Julian reached for it, a barely perceptible tremor in his hand. He was about to sign away my life, my child’s future, everything I held dear.

Just as the pen touched the first page, I stepped forward.

With a deliberate movement, I reached inside my jacket and pulled out Julian’s handwritten confession. The pages, crumpled and tear-stained, felt like a burning beacon in my hand.

I placed them squarely on the table, right between Julian’s trembling hand and the pristine divorce papers. The papers made a soft thud as they landed.

Eleanor’s eyes immediately darted to the pages. Her face, usually so composed, contorted into a mask of pure disbelief and dawning horror. Julian, seeing his own scrawl, froze. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

The other relatives leaned forward, murmuring in confusion. Marcus stepped up beside me, his presence a silent declaration of support.

Before Eleanor could recover, before Julian could snatch the pages away, a heavy knock echoed through the room. Not a gentle tap, but a deliberate, authoritative rap that vibrated through the old manor’s walls.

Then, a second knock. This one louder, more demanding.

The lawyer looked up, startled. Eleanor’s eyes, fixed on the confession, darted to the door, a flicker of true fear finally appearing in their icy depths.

The heavy oak doors to the signing room swung open slowly, revealing the grim, impassive faces of two men in dark, impeccably tailored suits. Behind them, I could glimpse more figures, silhouetted against the manor’s now-dimming light.

Don Vinnie Castaglione’s enforcers had arrived.
