Accessing Ethan’s system was going to be tough. He was a cybersecurity professional; his personal network would be locked down tighter than Fort Knox. I couldn’t just guess a password.

I needed physical access to one of his devices, or a way to get him to unknowingly grant it.

The next day, as I served Ethan his coffee, I noticed him typing furiously on his laptop in the kitchen. He was focused, muttering under his breath about a “bug in the API.” His fingers flew across the keyboard.

He always left his laptop open when he stepped away, trusting his security settings. But what if those security settings could be bypassed?

I remembered a trick my tech-savvy cousin had shown me once: a USB drive loaded with specific software that could extract network configurations or even bypass some login screens on a sleeping computer. It was a long shot, highly technical, and completely unethical. But Nia’s burns were unethical, too.

I started doing some research during Nia’s naptime, using my own phone. My heart pounded as I typed “USB password extractor” into the search bar. There were kits, open-source tools, even simple scripts. It wasn’t like I was hacking the Pentagon, I told myself. This was for a child.

Later that afternoon, Ethan left his laptop open on the kitchen island, a half-eaten sandwich beside it, while he took a call in the study. This was my chance.

My hands shook as I pulled out the small USB drive I’d bought online using a burner credit card. It felt illicit, dangerous. I slid it into the side port of his sleek, metallic laptop.

The screen flickered, a tiny command window popped up, running lines of code. It was happening. Too fast. I pulled it out after only a few seconds, fearing detection. I didn’t want to leave a trace.

Did it work? I had no idea.

I went back to Nia, helping her with her homework, trying to act normal. My mind, though, was replaying the few seconds I had the USB in. It had flashed, then an “Extraction Complete” message appeared before I snatched it away.

That night, alone in my room, I plugged the USB into my cheap, old laptop. My screen glowed with a jumble of filenames. I recognized “network_configs.txt,” “login_cache.json.” I started scrolling through the data. It was overwhelming, a mess of technical jargon.

Then, I saw it: “DELACROIX_HOME_NVR_ACCESS_KEY.” A long string of alphanumeric characters. And underneath, a URL for a local network IP address.

It wasn’t a password, but an access key. This looked like direct administrative access to the Network Video Recorder (NVR) where all the security camera footage was stored. My hands were clammy. This was it. I had a key to the Delacroix’s digital kingdom. And to Nia’s secret.
