A babysitter discovered the stepmother attempting to harm her 7-year-old stepdaughter with a hot hair curler and falsely accused her. Security camera footage exposed the truth.
The next morning, I waited for the perfect window. Ethan was at work, Alexis was out for her daily yoga class, and Nia was at school. The house was finally empty, silent except for the hum of the refrigerator.
I pulled out my laptop, heart hammering. I typed the IP address from the USB drive into my browser. A login screen appeared, asking for a username and password. But there was also a field for an “Admin Key.”
I copied and pasted the long alphanumeric string into the Admin Key field. My finger hovered over the “Login” button. This was it. No turning back.
I clicked.
The screen refreshed. I was in. The interface was surprisingly simple, showing a grid of live feeds from every camera in the house. Exterior views, the living room, the kitchen. And then I saw it, labeled “Nia’s Room.”
My breath caught in my throat. There was the small dome camera, clearly active. The timestamp in the corner of the live feed was current. It was all real.
I navigated to the recording archives, inputting dates and times. I went back to the morning I walked in on Alexis with the curling iron.
The footage loaded. It was silent, grainy, but clear enough. I watched as Alexis moved around Nia’s room, not just “admiring” Nia’s hair. She was holding the curling iron. She turned it on. She held it close to Nia’s head, sectioning off small pieces of hair.
Nia sat still, a tiny figure, her face a mask of compliance. Alexis worked quickly, expertly, but there was a tension in her movements. A sharp intake of breath from Nia, a small flinch. Alexis quickly moved the iron away, then resumed. Each time, Nia visibly stiffened.
And then, I saw it. Alexis pressed the hot barrel a little too close to Nia’s scalp. Nia cried out, a silent scream that tore through me even without sound. She pulled away, tears welling in her eyes.
Alexis reacted quickly, a swift, almost aggressive movement. She put her hand over Nia’s mouth, shushing her, her face a mixture of anger and panic. She pulled out a small tube of cream, applied it hastily, then smoothed Nia’s hair over the spot. Her lips moved, mouthing something I could only guess was “dry skin.”
Then, Alexis stood up, turned off the iron, and dropped it onto the vanity. Just as I saw myself, a blurry figure in the doorway, entering the frame. Alexis straightened, her face instantly composed, the fake smile already in place.
The truth was sickening. It wasn’t just an accident. It was forced, repeated, and covered up. Alexis was actively silencing Nia, physically and emotionally.
I fast-forwarded through other days. The pattern was consistent: Alexis doing Nia’s hair with the hot iron, Nia’s flinches, the hurried cover-ups. There were at least five distinct instances over the past two weeks where Nia clearly reacted to pain from the iron.
My stomach churned. I had the proof. Now I just needed to figure out how to use it without putting Nia at further risk, or getting myself fired and exiled from her life.
