The house felt like a powder keg after that night. Ethan was quiet, withdrawn, his face a constant storm cloud. Alexis moved through the rooms like a ghost, her usual bright facade replaced by a brittle defensiveness. Nia, sensing the shift, was even quieter than usual.

I was relieved Ethan knew, but I was also terrified. What would he do? Divorce? Therapy? Would Alexis try to get rid of me, the anonymous messenger?

A few days later, Ethan called me into his study. The air was thick with tension. He sat behind his large mahogany desk, looking exhausted.

“Zola,” he began, his voice flat. “Thank you for what you did. I… I don’t know what to say. I’m horrified.”

I just nodded, my hands clasped tightly in front of me.

“I confronted Alexis,” he continued. “She admitted to… incidents. But she frames it as extreme stress, accidental brushes. She insists it’s not abuse.”

I kept my face neutral, but inside, I bristled. “Accidental brushes” didn’t explain covering Nia’s mouth or lying to her.

“I’ve talked to my lawyer,” Ethan said, running a hand over his tired face. “I want to file for divorce. And I want full custody of Nia.”

A wave of relief washed over me. Full custody was what Nia needed.

“But,” Ethan paused, his gaze troubled. “My lawyer, Mr. Davies, pointed out a significant issue. Alexis has a prenuptial agreement.”

My heart sank. Of course she did. Ethan was wealthy.

“The prenup states that if I initiate a divorce within the first three years of marriage, without specific proof of infidelity or *physical abuse* resulting in hospitalization, Alexis is entitled to a payout of five million US dollars and continued access to the lake house for six months.”

Five million dollars. For burning a child and lying about it. My jaw clenched. This was the legal loophole. Alexis knew exactly how to play the system.

“And her lawyer,” Ethan continued, “is already arguing that the burns are ‘minor epidermal irritations,’ not ‘abuse’ in the legal sense. She’s claiming they’re a result of my negligence, for not providing a professional stylist for Nia at home.”

It was a sickening twist. Alexis was deflecting, blaming Ethan, and using the financial leverage of the prenup to escape consequences. She wasn’t worried about Nia; she was worried about her money and her image.

“Mr. Davies says it’s an uphill battle,” Ethan finished, his voice heavy with defeat. “She’ll drag this out, make it ugly, and still get her money unless we can prove severe, intentional harm, which the camera footage doesn’t quite do on its own, given the prenup’s language.”

The system was designed to protect the rich, even when they hurt children. I felt a surge of anger. This wasn’t about money for me, but about justice for Nia. Five million US dollars was a fortune, and Alexis was trying to leverage a child’s pain to get it. I had to find a way around that prenup.
