The sun climbed higher, baking the Ozark dust. The nursery window offered a sliver of view towards the main gate. A vehicle I didn’t recognize pulled up, a dark green sedan with county plates.

My stomach clenched. This had to be him. Gabriel Kincaid, the secular county social worker I’d managed to slip an anonymous tip to, weeks ago, about “unusual infant health incidents” in the commune.

I held my breath, watching. Gabriel stepped out, a man in his late thirties with a neatly trimmed beard and a serious expression. He carried a leather briefcase.

He approached the gate, where Elder Micah Carver already waited, his posture stiff and unyielding.

Gabriel presented his identification, spoke calmly. I could see his lips moving, but the distance muffled his words. He was here to verify child welfare reports.

Micah, however, remained impassive. He held up a stack of documents, official-looking papers with crisp edges. Religious exemption paperwork, I knew it. Pre-signed. Miriam had planned for this.

He spoke curtly, his hand making a dismissive gesture. Gabriel looked confused, then frustrated. He tried to argue, gesturing back towards his car, perhaps indicating a warrant, or at least a right to investigate.

But Micah was unyielding. The legal wall of the cult was impenetrable. Miriam had seen to that. Years of careful legal maneuvers, exploiting every loophole in state and federal law regarding religious institutions and child welfare.

Gabriel Kincaid finally gave up. He shook his head, a look of defeat on his face, and returned to his sedan. He backed up, turned, and disappeared down the dusty road.

A cold certainty settled over me. No outside agency would breach the cult’s legal wall in time. Not to save Ruth from another dosage of that sickening tincture. Not to protect any of them.

I was alone in this. Absolutely, utterly alone.

My gaze fell on Ruth, sleeping fitfully in her crib. Her small chest rose and fell, fragile.

I couldn’t wait any longer. Waiting meant another dose, another spiral downwards for her. The evening service was approaching, when Miriam would be at her most powerful, when the entire flock would be gathered.

I had to act now.

Miriam’s private study. That was the key. The source of her power, her secrets, her control. I needed physical proof. Something irrefutable, something that even Elder Micah couldn’t dismiss with legal jargon.

A plan, reckless and desperate, formed in my mind. Breaking into Miriam’s office. It was a sacrilege in the commune, a direct challenge to her authority. But it was the only path left.

I kissed Ruth’s forehead, a silent promise. Then I moved the heavy oak beam back against the nursery door, making sure it was secured from the inside.

I glanced at the small, narrow window high up on the far wall of the nursery. It opened onto a seldom-used storage shed. It was a tight squeeze, but I was thin, and years of combat had taught me how to slip through impossible spaces.

Taking a deep breath, I pulled a chair beneath the window, preparing to make my move. The clock was ticking.
