The air shifted, a sudden, unnatural chill sweeping through the compound. The wind, which had been a gentle breeze all day, began to whip around the eaves, rattling the windows.

I stood my ground in Miriam’s office, the logbook clutched tight. The guards hesitated, their eyes darting to the darkening sky.

“The storm,” one of them muttered, a flicker of unease crossing his face.

Miriam ignored him. “Release the book, Silas, or face the consequences.”

“These consequences are yours, Miriam,” I retorted, gesturing to the logbook. “You poisoned these children.”

Her face twisted, a flash of pure rage. “Grab him!”

I didn’t wait. I bolted past her, ducking under the guard’s staff, bursting out into the main hallway. The guards were slow, heavy-footed. Miriam screamed my name, her voice echoing through the darkening corridors.

I ran. Straight for the nursery. I had to get Ruth.

The sky outside was turning an angry black, bruised purples and grays swirling together. A fierce, unseasonal Ozark microburst storm was rolling over the mountain compound, faster than anything I’d ever seen.

I reached the nursery, slammed the heavy oak door shut, and slid the beam back into place. Ruth was awake, her tiny cries soft, frightened.

I scooped her up, wrapping her in every heavy wool blanket I could find, tucking her against my chest. Her warmth was a small comfort against the growing dread in the room.

Outside, the wind howled, a banshee shriek. Timbers groaned. I could hear Miriam’s voice, amplified, calling the entire congregation.

“He has violated the sacred space!” she shrieked. “He has taken the child! We must reclaim what is ours!”

Heavy thuds began to shake the nursery door. Elder Micah. The guards. The full weight of the commune’s authority, backed by their righteous anger.

The air grew heavy, electric. The entire compound plunged into darkness as the storm knocked out all electrical power. The only light now came from the frantic flashes of lightning outside, briefly illuminating the frantic faces pressing against the nursery door.

Seventy-mile-per-hour winds roared, tearing at the very fabric of the sanctuary. I could hear splintering wood, the terrifying crack of timber from the main chapel roof. The whole building was groaning, swaying.

I knew Miriam would force the doors open. They would take Ruth. They would silence me.

I held Ruth tighter, moving to the center of the room, as far from the crumbling walls as possible. The sanctuary spire, the tallest point of the compound, swayed violently against the black sky.

This was it. The confrontation was coming, driven by the wrath of Miriam, and the wrath of the heavens.
