Chapter 10: A Quiet Valley Far Away

The heavy oak door of the nursery shuddered, splintering around the beam I’d wedged. Elder Micah’s bellowed commands mixed with the roar of the wind, demanding entry. The guards heaved, their staffs battering the frame.

I braced myself, pulling Ruth closer, my body shielding her small form. This was the end of the line.

Then, a blinding flash of white light. So immediate, so impossibly bright, it burned behind my eyelids. The ground beneath me shuddered violently.

A deafening CRACK ripped through the air, shaking the very foundations of the building. It wasn’t just a thunderclap. It was closer. Too close.

The central roof spire of the sanctuary exploded. Lightning had struck it directly.

Oak beams, heavy and ancient, screamed as they shattered, tearing through the roof above. A cascade of dust, plaster, and splinters rained down. The force of the impact ripped through the nursery door, tearing it from its hinges.

Chaos erupted. Screams of terror from the congregation filled the air as the roof structure began to buckle. In the blinding, chaotic flash, amidst the panicked rush of fleeing bodies, a figure stumbled.

Sister Hannah.

She had been right at the front, part of the crowd surging towards the door. Her hands flew up, covering her face as a piece of falling debris grazed her shoulder.

Something tumbled from her grasp. A small, leather-bound book.

It slid across the dust-covered floor, propelled by the rush of wind and debris, coming to a rest just past the threshold of the nursery, directly in front of the horrified, fleeing flock.

Miriam’s hidden dosage ledger. It lay open, illuminated by another flash of lightning, exposing the poison recipes, the dates, the names, all in her own meticulously neat hand.

A collective gasp rose from the few still standing, still trapped in the sanctuary. Their eyes, wide with terror, focused not on the collapsing roof, but on the damning pages.

Miriam’s face, pale with fear, snapped from the collapsing roof to the open book, then to Hannah, then to me. Her expression was pure, unadulterated horror. Her control, her authority, her entire constructed reality, shattered in that instant.

The main support beam above the nursery door, already weakened by the lightning strike, gave a final, agonizing groan. It snapped.

Two tons of heavy timber, sharpened to a deadly point by the impact, began to fall. Straight towards Ruth’s crib. Straight towards us.

There was no time to think. No time to move.

I threw my body over Ruth’s crib, arching my back, pulling her tiny form beneath me. My arms wrapped around her, making myself a shield.

The world exploded in a searing white pain. The timber slammed down, not on Ruth, but on me. A crushing, sickening impact across my spine. The air was forced from my lungs in a strangled cry.

Everything went black.

Miriam, caught in the panicked retreat, was not so lucky. A jagged piece of rubble, torn from the altar, pinned her against the ancient stone, her cries of pain lost in the roaring wind and the crumbling walls.
