The silence in the grand hall stretched, thick and suffocating. It was broken only by the frantic tapping of the news crew’s fingers on their control board, and the audible gasps of several guests. Leo’s innocent question still echoed in the sudden void.

Aunt Eleanor stood like a statue, her hand still raised in a half-wave to the councilman, who now stared at the livestream screen with a look of dawning horror.

On the large screen behind the news desk, the livestream chat exploded. It wasn’t just comments now; it was a torrent of accusations, question marks, and angry emojis.

“FRAUD!” one message flashed.

“Harrington family setting up a child and a teenager?!” another demanded.

“Is this why the fundraiser is so high? To cover up a scandal?” a prominent donor’s name appeared next to the comment.

The local community leaders, many of whom were present in the room and recognized in the chat, began to whisper amongst themselves. Their faces, moments ago full of polite smiles, were now etched with concern and suspicion.

Mr. Henderson, the news anchor, recovered quickly, though his voice was noticeably strained. “We seem to have experienced a… technical difficulty,” he stammered, attempting to divert attention, but it was too late.

The damage was done. The camera had captured Elena’s tablet. Leo’s voice had carried. The internet had seen everything.

Julian, his arm around Leo, looked at me, a mixture of awe and grim satisfaction on his face. He gently pulled Leo away from the immediate vicinity, out of the direct line of fire.

Aunt Eleanor finally moved. Her head turned slowly, her gaze sweeping across the room. Her eyes, usually so sharp and commanding, were now wide, almost pleading. She tried to make eye contact with a few key figures in the crowd, but their gazes slid away from hers.

The buzzing in the room grew louder, no longer polite conversation, but an agitated murmur. The whispers were no longer contained.

“She accused that poor girl…” I heard one woman say.

“…tried to get a quarter-million dollars…” a man finished, shaking his head.

The sheer weight of public opinion, instantly channeled through the livestream and amplified by the prominent guests, crashed down on Eleanor. She had built her entire persona on impeccable reputation and charitable endeavors. Now, it was crumbling in real-time.

The news crew, realizing the bombshell they’d just broadcast, began to discreetly adjust their cameras, trying to capture the shifting mood in the room without directly showing the source of the scandal. But the camera had already seen the tablet.

Elena, still holding the tablet, had tears streaming silently down her face. She wasn’t crying from sadness, but from relief. The burden of Eleanor’s scheme, and her own complicity, had been lifted.

The director of the charity, a woman who had worked with Eleanor for years, approached her cautiously. Her expression was one of deep disappointment, not anger.

“Eleanor,” she began, her voice barely audible over the rising din. “What was that?”

Eleanor didn’t answer. She simply stood there, watching the relentless scroll of angry messages on the large screen, a public tribunal unfolding before her very eyes. Her carefully constructed world, built on control and image, was collapsing.

Her authority, usually unassailable, dissolved in the face of widespread public outrage. There was no denying it, no spinning it. A child had seen it, and the world had witnessed it.

She had been caught. And there was nowhere to hide.
