I walked back into the main hall, Elena’s tablet clutched in my hand, my heart thumping a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Julian met my gaze from across the room, his eyes asking the silent question. I gave him a small, decisive nod.

The gala was in full swing. Laughter and polite applause punctuated the evening. A local news crew, broadcasting live for the annual Harrington Family Charity Drive, had set up their cameras near a large screen displaying the live stream chat. Hundreds of eyes, both in the room and online, were watching.

This was it. No private confrontations, no whispered demands. The truth needed to be public.

Julian was already subtly moving towards the area where my younger brother, Leo, was engrossed in a game on his own tablet. Leo, at eight years old, was a whirlwind of energy, currently quiet only because of his game.

I approached Elena again, who was now standing closer to the main thoroughfare. “Elena,” I said, “I need you to keep this video playing. On a loop, if possible. And keep the brightness up.”

She understood immediately, her eyes widening. She began adjusting the settings on the tablet.

“What are you doing, Maya?” Julian asked, his voice low, as he joined me.

“Giving the truth a stage,” I replied, my gaze fixed on the livestream screen. The live chat scrolled rapidly, comments about the gala and the Harrington family’s generosity filling the screen.

Elena held the tablet discreetly, but openly enough that someone passing by might glimpse the moving images. Julian guided Leo gently towards us.

Leo, completely absorbed in his game, didn’t look up. He moved with the unconscious grace of a child, stopping near where Elena held the tablet. He was just tall enough to easily see the screen.

The livestream presenter, a local news anchor named Mr. Henderson, was now speaking directly into the camera, praising Aunt Eleanor’s philanthropic efforts. Eleanor herself stood nearby, a serene smile fixed on her face, occasionally waving to guests.

My palms were sweating. Any moment now.

Leo, still tapping at his own screen, must have caught a flash of movement on Elena’s tablet out of the corner of his eye. His head tilted. Then he paused his game.

His brow furrowed in concentration as he watched the silent replay of the vase falling. He watched it once. Then a second time.

The noise of the gala seemed to fade around us. My breathing felt shallow.

Suddenly, Leo’s small finger shot out, pointing directly at Elena’s tablet screen. His voice, clear and uninhibited, cut through the polite murmurs.

“Hey!” he exclaimed, loud enough for those nearby to turn. “Look! Why did Aunt Eleanor kick the vase?”

The words hung in the air. Time seemed to slow.

Mr. Henderson, the news anchor, paused mid-sentence, his smile faltering. Aunt Eleanor, who had been laughing with a local councilman, stopped dead, her head swiveling towards the sound of Leo’s voice.

A few guests nearest to us turned, their expressions shifting from curiosity to confusion. Leo, completely innocent, didn’t notice the sudden shift in atmosphere. He just wanted an answer.

“She kicked it!” he repeated, pointing again, his eyes wide. “She kicked the stand!”

The livestream camera, which had been focused on Mr. Henderson and Eleanor, slowly panned. It followed the line of Leo’s pointing finger, settling directly on Elena’s tablet.

The grainy, silent video of Aunt Eleanor’s foot deliberately striking the pedestal played on its small screen, visible to everyone. And, more importantly, visible to the live camera.

The feed, for a split second, showed a close-up of the incriminating video. Then it cut back to Mr. Henderson, whose face had gone pale, his professional smile completely gone.

The livestream chat, displayed on the large screen behind him, usually a cascade of well-wishes and donation pledges, suddenly went silent. Then, it exploded.

“Did anyone else just see that?”

“Replay! Replay the tablet!”

“Eleanor Harrington *kicked* it?!”

The elegant, carefully curated atmosphere of the Harrington gala shattered, replaced by a ripple of stunned silence, then a growing buzz of disbelief and outrage.

Aunt Eleanor’s face, which had been so composed moments before, had frozen. Her eyes, fixed on the tablet screen, were wide with a terror I hadn’t seen before.

Leo, oblivious to the chaos he’d just unleashed, turned to me. “Mommy said you can’t kick things inside, Maya. Why did Aunt Eleanor kick the vase?”

My eight-year-old brother, with his simple, innocent observation, had just laid bare the truth before hundreds of people.
