Chapter 8: Sunday’s Silence

The next call came from Detective Morales, just as Brenda had predicted. His voice, usually calm and measured, carried an edge of frustration.

“Mr. O’Connell,” he began, without preamble. “I need to give you an update on the children’s case.”

“What’s happening?” I asked, my heart thumping. I knew it couldn’t be good news from his tone.

“Child Protective Services attempted to interview Mr. O’Connell and Mrs. Callahan yesterday,” Morales said. “But Mark O’Connell has retained David Sterling as legal counsel.”

The name hit me like a physical blow. David Sterling was a notoriously high-powered defense attorney, known for his aggressive tactics and ability to stonewall. He specialized in protecting affluent clients from scandal.

“Sterling immediately invoked their right to remain silent for Mrs. Callahan,” Morales continued, his frustration evident. “And for Mr. O’Connell, he claimed that any attempts to interview the children directly without parental consent would be a violation of their rights, citing your own ‘unstable past’ as a reason for potential coercion.”

My jaw tightened. “My past has nothing to do with this.”

“He’s making it relevant, Mr. O’Connell,” Morales countered, a sigh escaping him. “He’s arguing that your history of gambling addiction and recent divorce renders you an unreliable witness, capable of ‘projecting issues’ onto the children, or even ‘coaching’ them to make accusations out of vindictiveness against your brother.”

“That’s a lie,” I growled.

“I believe you,” Morales said quickly. “But proving it in court, against Sterling, is another matter. He’s implying that you’re unstable and that the children’s statements could be interpreted as a product of your influence, not their genuine experience. It makes it very difficult for CPS to proceed without direct, verifiable physical evidence or independent testimony that isn’t contaminated by these claims.”

The injustice of it burned through me. My attempts to redeem myself, to build a new life, were being weaponized against the very children I was trying to save. Mark was using his money, his influence, and my own shame to block justice. It was a calculated, cruel move.

“So what does that mean?” I asked, my voice tight with suppressed fury. “They just get away with it? They hurt those kids and nothing happens?”

“We’re doing everything we can,” Morales insisted. “Dr. Rodriguez’s reports are strong, and we have enough to maintain protective custody for now. But building a criminal case that sticks is proving challenging. Sterling has effectively created a wall of plausible deniability around his clients. He’s also threatened to file a restraining order against you if you continue to contact Mr. O’Connell or his family, citing harassment.”

I felt a surge of helplessness, a familiar feeling from my darkest days, when the casino floor felt like quicksand and every bet pulled me deeper. It was that same kind of suffocating trap, and I hated it.

I hung up, pacing my small living room, the words echoing in my head: *unreliable witness… potential coercion… harassment.* This wasn’t just about proving Megan’s guilt. It was about fighting a system designed to protect the powerful, a system that now saw me as a liability.

I called Brenda immediately.

“Morales just called,” I said, without greeting. “Mark’s hired David Sterling. He’s using my past against me, saying I’m unreliable, that I’m coercing the children. He’s stonewalling everything.”

“I expected this,” Brenda replied calmly, her voice a balm to my raw nerves. “Sterling is good at what he does. He turns the accuser into the accused. But this confirms our strategy, Liam.”

“What strategy?” I asked, frustration bubbling over. “It feels like we’re hitting brick walls everywhere.”

“The public pressure strategy,” she reiterated. “The legal system is failing to protect these children because of money and influence. We have to bypass it. We have to bring the evidence to a forum that Sterling can’t control.”

“So, the article,” I said, a glimmer of hope piercing through the despair.

“Yes,” Brenda confirmed. “My editor signed off on the final draft this morning. It’s ready. I’ve chosen a time for it to go live. It’s tight, but it’s our best shot. I have to warn you, once it’s out there, there’s no taking it back. The floodgates will open.”

“Good,” I said, a grim satisfaction settling in my chest. “Let them open.”

My internal conflict was sharp. I hated the idea of publicizing my family’s dirty laundry, of seeing Mark and Megan dragged through the mud. They were still family, after all, however twisted that connection now felt. But the image of Ethan’s quiet suffering, Lily’s broken body, extinguished any lingering loyalty. They deserved whatever was coming to them.

Brenda gave me a few last-minute instructions. “When the article goes live, I want you to be prepared. Your phone will likely explode. Family members who ignored you before might suddenly be calling, some in support, many in anger. Ignore them for now. Let the story do its work.”

“I will,” I promised.

“Also,” she added, “I’m going to include a specific detail from ‘PerfectMommy22’s’ posts about a ‘discipline tool’ that ‘disappeared’ after her husband ‘complained it was too harsh.’ It’s vague enough to be legally safe, but for anyone who recognizes the story, it will serve as a powerful identifier of complicity.”

A chill went down my spine. That specific detail, hinting at Mark’s direct involvement in destroying evidence. It would be a dagger.

“When does it go live?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“Tonight,” Brenda said. “I’ll text you the moment it’s published. Be ready, Liam. This is it.”

The phone clicked off. The house felt too quiet again, but the silence was different now. It was charged, expectant. Tonight. The hours stretched out before me, heavy with anticipation. I felt a knot of dread mixed with fierce determination. My past might have been used against me, but my resolve to protect my nephews had never been stronger. The legal system might be blocked, but the truth, once unleashed, would find its own way to exact justice.
