Chapter 13: Twilight Over Kerry Park

The rain was coming down in thick, cold sheets by the time Julian and I pulled up to our townhouse. The front porch light cast a watery glow on the street. I clutched the forged birth certificate, the reality of Sarah’s deceit a growing weight in my hands.

We needed to get our legal documents, bank statements, anything that could prove Sarah’s manipulation. We needed to protect ourselves.

Julian pulled the house key from his pocket, his hand already reaching for the lock.

It didn’t turn.

He tried again, twisting the key, but it simply spun uselessly in the new, unfamiliar keyhole. A shiny, brass deadbolt glinted under the porch light, one we had never installed.

My blood ran cold.

“What in the world…?” Julian muttered, trying the handle. It was locked tight.

Just then, the front door swung open. Beatrice stood there, framed in the doorway, a smug look on her face. She held a stack of legal papers.

“Julian, Clara,” she said, her voice cool and distant, “I’m afraid you won’t be needing those.”

She stepped onto the porch, the rain plastering her hair to her cheeks. She held out a document, its legal language dense and intimidating.

“Mom has invoked the power of attorney clause over your family trust assets, Julian,” Beatrice announced, her words cutting through the sound of the rain. “Sarah helped her arrange it. Effective immediately.”

My jaw dropped. The power of attorney. Julian’s family trust was substantial, inherited from his grandfather. Eleanor controlled it, but Julian had full access. Now, it was being used against us.

“She believes, with good reason, that Clara is unstable,” Beatrice continued, her eyes flickering to me. “And that you, Julian, are being unduly influenced.”

Julian took a step forward, his face reddening with anger. “Beatrice, this is insane! You know Clara isn’t unstable. What has Sarah told you?”

“Enough,” Beatrice retorted, holding up a hand. “The locks have been changed for your protection, Julian. For your financial protection.”

Just then, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb. The passenger window rolled down, revealing Sarah. She offered a small, pitying smile.

“Clara,” Sarah called out, her voice unnaturally calm in the downpour. “It really doesn’t have to be like this.”

She got out of the car, carrying a small, waterproof briefcase. She stepped onto the porch, joining Beatrice. She held out the briefcase, opening it to reveal stacks of crisp, new hundred-dollar bills.

“Fifty thousand dollars, Clara,” Sarah said, her voice a low murmur. “Cash. For a quiet separation agreement. You sign, you leave Seattle, and this nightmare goes away.”

The rain hammered down around us, mirroring the storm inside me. Fifty thousand dollars for my silence, for my disappearance. Sarah was trying to buy me out, to erase me from Julian’s life and from Seattle entirely.

I looked at the money, then at Julian, who stood rigid with shock and fury. I looked at Beatrice, cold and unyielding, and then at Sarah, who met my gaze with an unsettling confidence. She believed she had won.

I found the bleeding stray cat behind the hospital dumpster at 3:00 AM, holding a newborn's plastic ID band in its teeth.
