Chapter 12: Two Years Later

A hush fell over the ballroom as the grand oak doors, usually kept closed during the main event, burst open. A figure stood silhouetted against the bright hallway lights, drawing every eye.

It was Lucas. My estranged brother.

He looked different. Sharper. His usually casual attire was replaced by a crisp navy suit, and his face, typically softened by a boyish charm, was now set with a grim determination I hadn’t seen in years. He wasn’t alone. Two other men, clearly legal professionals with serious expressions and attaché cases, stood a respectful pace behind him.

My breath hitched. Lucas, who had distanced himself after my bankruptcy, after my stint in rehab, who I’d thought had abandoned me completely, was here.

Julian Pembroke stared, utterly dumbfounded. “What is the meaning of this?” he demanded, his voice cracking with thinly veiled panic.

Lucas didn’t acknowledge Julian directly. His eyes, dark and intense, found mine across the crowded room. There was no pity there, only a shared, fierce resolve. A flicker of apology, too, for his absence.

He walked with purpose, his steps measured and deliberate, directly towards the stage. The crowd parted for him as if on cue, a wave of whispers following in his wake.

“I believe,” Lucas said, his voice carrying clearly to the stage as he approached, “I have some relevant information pertaining to the legitimacy of Mr. Pembroke’s claims on the DeWitt estate.”

He stopped directly in front of the stage, his gaze sweeping over the crowd, then settling on Judge Ellsworth.

“Judge Ellsworth, sir,” Lucas continued, “my name is Lucas DeWitt. I apologize for the interruption, but I’ve been quietly investigating Julian Pembroke’s land acquisition tactics for the past six months, specifically regarding the DeWitt trust.”

The words hung in the air, a stunning revelation. Six months. While I had been spiraling, while I had been fighting for sobriety and trying to rebuild from the ashes, my brother had been working in the shadows. He hadn’t abandoned me after all.

Julian, recovering from his shock, exploded. “Investigating? This is preposterous! Baseless slander! You have no standing here, Lucas!”

Lucas merely raised an eyebrow, a cool, unshakeable confidence radiating from him. “On the contrary, Mr. Pembroke. I believe I have precisely the standing required. And a sworn affidavit that will clarify the *true* nature of your claims.”

He gestured to one of the men accompanying him, who stepped forward, holding a thick, bound document. My heart pounded with a renewed, desperate hope.
