The news of my majority ownership spread like wildfire through Apex Dynamics. Julian’s authority crumbled almost overnight. He was still technically CEO, but his every move was scrutinized, his decisions now subject to my veto. My immediate priority was freezing any further questionable financial activities.

A week later, I received an urgent call from Mr. Davies, the Head of Intellectual Property. His voice was tight with urgency.

“Ms. Bennett, you need to come down to my office immediately. It’s about Julian. He’s trying to sell the ApexAI suite.”

My stomach lurched. The ApexAI suite was the crown jewel of the company, the proprietary software that gave us our competitive edge. Its core algorithms were my father’s most brilliant creation.

I arrived at Davies’ office to find him pale, pacing. “He was on a video call, Ms. Bennett. With representatives from OmniTech, a major international firm. He was presenting the ApexAI patents, offering them an exclusive license, even a full buyout for a ridiculously low sum.”

“How much?” I asked, a cold fury building inside me.

“A hundred million dollars,” Davies replied, running a hand through his thinning hair. “For the entire suite. He must be desperate for cash after you froze his accounts.”

A hundred million dollars. For technology worth easily twice that, if not more, to a strategic buyer. It was a fire sale, pure and simple, a desperate grab for liquidity to cover whatever hole he was in. And it would cripple Apex Dynamics.

“Did he finalize anything?” I pressed, trying to keep my voice even.

“No, thankfully,” Davies said, pulling up a complex legal document on his monitor. “But he was very close. They were discussing final terms, pushing for an immediate signature.”

He turned the monitor toward me. It was a complex web of patent registrations and intellectual property assignments. “Julian was claiming that Apex Dynamics owned all the rights. He presented copies of internal company registrations.”

“But that’s not right,” I stated, a memory stirring. “My father… he always said he protected his core innovations separately. He was paranoid about corporate takeovers.”

Davies nodded slowly. “Indeed. And that’s the strange part. When I cross-referenced the patent numbers Julian was presenting with the official government registry, something didn’t match.”

He clicked a few more times, pulling up another document. This one had an official government seal.

“Apex Dynamics holds numerous secondary patents related to interface and user experience for the AI,” Davies explained, pointing to various sections. “But the core foundational algorithms, the ones that truly define ApexAI, the ones Julian was offering to OmniTech…”

He paused, then pointed to a specific line in the official registry. “Those patents were never transferred to Apex Dynamics. They remained under a separate entity. Marcus Bennett Personal Innovations, LLC.”

My father’s name. A separate entity. A secret layer of protection.

“And who controls Marcus Bennett Personal Innovations, LLC?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.

Davies looked at me, a glimmer of admiration in his eyes. “The sole beneficial owner and managing trustee of Marcus Bennett Personal Innovations, LLC, is listed as… Maya Bennett. Through the Marcus Bennett Irrevocable Trust.”

A wave of relief washed over me, quickly followed by a fierce pride in my late father’s foresight. Julian had tried to sell something that wasn’t even the company’s to sell. He had tried to steal my personal intellectual property.

“So, Julian was attempting to sell off assets he doesn’t own, that Apex Dynamics doesn’t own,” I summarized, a cold smile forming on my lips. “Assets that belong to me.”

“Precisely,” Davies confirmed. “The sale would be legally null and void. A fraud.”

“Contact OmniTech immediately,” I instructed, my voice firm. “Inform them of this error. State that Apex Dynamics, under my majority ownership, fully retains its current IP portfolio and has no intention of selling the core AI patents. And make it clear that any further attempts by Julian to misrepresent ownership will result in legal action.”

Davies nodded vigorously, already reaching for his phone.

“And Mr. Davies,” I added, turning to leave, “send a formal cease and desist order to Julian Carver. For attempted fraud and misrepresentation of company assets.”

Julian’s desperation was showing. He was scrambling, desperate for funds, willing to dismantle my father’s legacy to save himself. But my father, even in death, had protected me. The core patents were frozen, locked under my personal name. Another one of Julian’s schemes had evaporated.
