Chapter 16: Epilogue — 9 Days Later

The news of a federal investigation into Julian hit the Carver family like a tsunami. Victoria, who had previously been so dismissive of me, now called me frantically, her voice riddled with panic. I ignored her calls.

Then, a few days later, Ethan received a tip from an anonymous source – a former financial advisor to the Carvers. It led to another shocking revelation.

I arrived at Victoria’s sprawling, opulent estate, a place that once felt intimidating but now seemed merely ostentatious. This time, Julian’s two influential aunts were also there, their faces drawn and furious. Victoria herself looked haggard, her usual perfect composure completely gone.

“Maya, thank goodness you came,” Victoria started, her voice raspy, a far cry from her usual imperious tone. “We need to talk about Chloe.”

“Chloe?” I replied, feigning innocence. “I thought she was Julian’s problem, and soon, the federal government’s.”

One of the aunts, a formidable woman named Eleanor, slammed her hand on the polished mahogany table. “Don’t play coy, Maya. We know she’s a gold-digger. But this… this goes too far.”

Victoria pushed a stack of bank statements across the table. Her hands trembled. “We discovered it this morning. Our family trust. Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Gone.”

My eyebrows rose. “Gone? To where?”

“To Chloe Kincaid,” Victoria spat, her face contorted with disgust. “She convinced Julian to authorize it, claiming it was an ‘urgent advance’ for the baby’s future, a ‘loan’ against his Apex Dynamics shares.”

“Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars,” Eleanor interjected, her voice tight with suppressed rage, “for a non-refundable earnest deposit on a luxury penthouse in Chicago. The lease was signed just weeks ago. In her name alone.”

The pieces clicked into place. Chloe’s frantic demands on the leaked audio about the “penthouse.” Her desperate scramble for funds. She wasn’t just after Julian’s money; she was after the entire Carver family’s wealth, systematically draining it.

Victoria buried her face in her hands. “I supported Julian, I stood by him when he brought her into our home. I even tried to evict you, Maya, thinking you were the problem. All the while, this conniving woman was bleeding us dry.”

Her voice was thick with self-reproach, the realization of Chloe’s true deceit shattering her social snobbery. She had been so focused on preserving the Carver family’s “reputation” by casting me out that she had enabled the very person who would destroy it.

“She used our money, our family funds,” the second aunt, Martha, added, her voice barely a whisper. “For her own selfish desires. A penthouse. While Julian faces prison.”

“And the federal agents,” Victoria said, looking up, her eyes red-rimmed. “They’re asking about the source of her wealth. About the ‘loans’ from our family trust. They’re connecting it to Julian’s alleged embezzlement.”

The gravity of the situation was dawning on them. Chloe hadn’t just used Julian; she had implicated the entire Carver family’s finances in a federal investigation. Their carefully cultivated social standing, their wealth, everything was crumbling.

“So,” I said, picking up one of the bank statements, the transaction clearly marked, “it seems Chloe’s greed has finally caught up to her. And to the Carver family, unfortunately.”

Victoria looked at me, a desperate plea in her eyes. “Maya, please. Can you… can you do something? We can’t have this public. It will ruin us.”

I met her gaze, remembering her cruel words, her attempts to throw me out of my home. “Victoria, you tried to portray me as a penniless burden. You supported Julian and Chloe in humiliating me. This is the consequence of your choices.”

“We were wrong about you, Maya,” Eleanor said, a genuine note of remorse in her voice. “We truly believed Julian’s version of events.”

“It’s too late for that,” I stated, my voice devoid of emotion. “The federal investigation is independent. It doesn’t care about family pride or social standing. It cares about fraud. And Chloe, it seems, has provided plenty of evidence.”

Just then, Victoria’s phone rang. She answered, her face going even paler as she listened. She ended the call, her hand shaking.

“That was Julian,” she whispered. “He said… he said Chloe just packed her bags and left. She’s gone. She took everything she could carry. She’s abandoned him.”

The betrayal was complete. Chloe, facing the heat of a federal inquiry and having secured her own escape fund, had left Julian to face the music alone. The Carver family, once so proud and unyielding, was in ruins, thanks to the very woman they had welcomed.
