👉 Previous Decision: You chose Option B – Confront corrupt accountant Silas Gable in his office directly.
The fluorescent lights of Silas Gable’s office cast harsh shadows as I pushed the door open. He sat behind his desk, hunched over a stack of expense reports, his face an unhealthy grey. The air was thick with the smell of stale coffee and cheap tobacco.
“Silas,” I said, my voice tight. “We need to talk about the ‘Overseer’ accounts.”
He looked up, his eyes widening slightly, then narrowing into slits. His hand, quick as a viper, darted under his desk.
“What are you talking about, Pendelton?” he growled, his face twisting into a mask of feigned ignorance. But the fear was palpable.
“Don’t play dumb,” I pressed, stepping further into the office. “The offshore transfers. The $200,000 payments. I’ve seen the ledgers, Silas. And I know you’re Marcus’s bagman.”
A high-pitched shriek pierced the air. An alarm. Silas had triggered it from beneath his desk.
“Security!” he bellowed, rising to his feet, a manic glint in his eyes. “Intruder! Engineer Pendelton is attempting to steal classified documents!”
The heavy steel door of his office slammed shut automatically, the mechanism whirring with an ominous finality. A red light pulsed above the doorframe. I lunged for it, but it was already sealed.
“You fool,” Silas sneered, a cruel smile spreading across his face. He leaned back against his desk, crossing his arms. “Marcus told me you might be trouble. Said you were too clever for your own good. He put in extra precautions.”
My heart hammered against my ribs. Trapped. Again. The hum of the mainframe seemed to grow louder, pulsating with a predatory rhythm. I could hear the distant thud of heavy boots approaching. This was no ordinary office. It was a cage.
Silas watched me with an almost cheerful malice. “Hope you enjoyed your brief memory. Because you won’t be having many more.”
The footsteps grew closer, punctuated by the sharp clicks of rifle butts. The heavy door rattled as a fist pounded on it from the outside. I had walked straight into a trap, relying on confrontation where subtlety was required.
