After His Son's Terrified Call, a Talent Manager Used His Shady Past to Expose His Ex-Wife's Abusive Partner
Damon called me late Tuesday afternoon, his voice hushed. “Got something for you. Quentin. Eleanor Vance.”
My blood ran cold. Eleanor Vance was Chloe’s mother, a woman with whom Chloe had a notoriously strained relationship. Eleanor was a social climber, always eager to attach herself to anyone with influence. She had never approved of me, seeing me as beneath Chloe’s aspirations.
“Where?” I asked, gripping the phone tighter.
“The Periwinkle Club,” Damon replied, naming an exclusive industry brunch spot known for its discretion and high-profile clientele. “Sunday. I saw them from across the room. Very chummy. Laughing. Head-to-head.”
The image burned in my mind: Quentin, charismatic and charming, weaving his spell over Eleanor, who was no doubt basking in the reflected glow of his success. It was a calculated move, a further step in his campaign to isolate me. If Chloe’s own mother, even estranged, publicly sided with Quentin, it would lend an air of legitimacy to his claims against me.
“What did they talk about?” I asked, though I already suspected the answer.
“Couldn’t hear specifics, obviously,” Damon said. “But the body language spoke volumes. Eleanor was practically eating out of his hand. And he was all attention, listening intently, nodding, smiling.”
My stomach churned. Quentin was a master manipulator, and Eleanor Vance was the perfect target: ambitious, insecure, and eager for validation. He knew exactly how to play on her desires.
A few days later, the trap sprung. Eleanor Vance, who usually only posted about her infrequent charity luncheons, suddenly shared a lengthy post on her social media. It was carefully worded, dripping with feigned concern.
“It pains me to see family members cause such distress,” the post began, “especially when dear Chloe is finally finding true happiness and stability with a wonderful, supportive partner like Quentin Croft. One must question the judgment of those who seek to disrupt such genuine joy, particularly when they harbor unresolved personal issues.”
She didn’t name me directly, of course. That would be too crass. But the implication was clear, a thinly veiled attack on my character and motives. She added a hashtag: #FamilyValues. The hypocrisy was astounding.
The post started circulating. My assistant discreetly brought it to my attention, her face a mask of polite concern. “Mr. Maxwell, this is making the rounds. A few of your clients have already… well, they’ve seen it.”
I stared at the screen, the words searing themselves into my mind. Eleanor, who hadn’t spoken to Chloe in months, was now publicly endorsing Quentin, all while subtly denigrating me. It was a vicious, personal attack, hitting me where it hurt the most – my credibility as a stable, responsible professional.
One of my less-than-subtle clients, a sitcom actor known for his explosive temper, even called me directly. “What’s this about your ex-mother-in-law talking trash, Leo? You got some family drama affecting your business now?”
I calmly reassured him, but the underlying message was clear: my personal life was becoming public fodder, and it was threatening my carefully constructed professional image. Quentin was systematically dismantling every pillar of my life, using Chloe, her mother, and a venal publicist as his pawns.
“This is exactly what he wants,” I told Damon later that evening. “He’s isolating me from Chloe, from Finn, and now from the industry. He’s making sure I have no allies, no one to back me up.”
“Then we find a different kind of ally,” Damon said, his voice hard. “One that plays by different rules.”
His words resonated deeply. Quentin thrived in the polite, image-obsessed world of Hollywood. He understood its unspoken rules, its unspoken threats. But I knew another world, one where reputations were built on loyalty and ruthlessness, not on carefully crafted public personas.
Eleanor Vance’s betrayal, cloaked in sanctimonious concern, was a personal wound. It was a reminder that in this fight, there were no sacred bonds, no untainted relationships. Quentin would use anyone and anything to maintain his control. And if he was willing to use family against me, then I had no choice but to use every weapon at my disposal, no matter how unsavory. The rules of engagement had just fundamentally changed. I was ready to descend back into the shadows.
