After His Son's Terrified Call, a Talent Manager Used His Shady Past to Expose His Ex-Wife's Abusive Partner
Backstage was a whirlwind of hushed whispers and frantic activity. Chloe, her face still pale with shock, found Quentin cornered by a bewildered event organizer. His usual charm was gone, replaced by a snarling, desperate anger.
“What the hell was that, Quentin?” Chloe demanded, her voice trembling. “A family emergency? What family emergency?”
Quentin spun around, his eyes wild. “Don’t you dare question me, Chloe! You think I wanted to look like a fool out there? Do you have any idea what’s at stake?”
His voice was no longer the smooth, comforting tone she knew. It was harsh, laced with a venom she’d never heard directed at her. The mask had completely fallen away, revealing the raw, ugly truth beneath.
“But the award… your speech…” Chloe stammered, still reeling from the public spectacle.
“To hell with the award!” he hissed, his face contorted with rage. “You think this means anything when my entire world is collapsing? My money, my reputation—it’s all being destroyed because of some petty jealous ex-husband!”
He took a step towards her, his finger jabbing in her direction. “And you! You’re useless! Always so naive, always believing whatever nonsense that fool Leo feeds you! I told you to cut him out, to keep him away, but you’re too weak, too pathetic to control your own life!”
Chloe flinched, physically recoiling from his verbal assault. The torrent of abuse, so sudden and brutal, shattered the carefully constructed illusion she had clung to. His promises of stability, his doting affection, his image as a protector—all of it crumbled in that instant. She saw him not as her savior, but as a venomous stranger. The weight of his manipulation, his lies, her own complicity, crashed down on her with devastating force. Her eyes, wide with horror, slowly filled with tears.
Just then, I stepped out from behind a curtain, having followed them backstage. My presence seemed to ignite a fresh wave of fury in Quentin.
“There he is!” Quentin spat, pointing a trembling finger at me. “The architect of my ruin! You think you’ve won, Maxwell? You’ve destroyed everything! My career, my future, everything I built!”
He lunged towards me, but Damon, who had quietly positioned himself nearby, stepped in between us, blocking Quentin with a firm, silent stance. Quentin cursed, stumbling back.
Chloe, wiping tears from her eyes, turned her gaze from Quentin to me. Her face, still streaked with tears, hardened into an expression of desperate resentment.
“You!” she cried, her voice cracking. “You did this! You ruined everything! My career, my chance at stability! My reputation is destroyed because of your insane vendetta!”
Her words were a fresh wound, a harsh reminder of her warped priorities. Even after witnessing Quentin’s true nature, her first instinct was to blame me, to lash out at the one person who had tried to save Finn, and, inadvertently, her. The personal cruelty of her accusation, ignoring Quentin’s venomous outburst and focusing solely on her own perceived losses, was chilling.
“Chloe,” I began, my voice strained, “he was hurting Finn. He was a criminal.”
“And you’re a criminal too!” she retorted, her voice rising to a frantic pitch. “You used your shady past, your disgusting connections, to tear down a powerful man! You dragged us all into your dark world! Now I have nothing left!”
She covered her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. The depth of her denial, her inability to acknowledge the severity of Quentin’s actions or the purity of my motives, was agonizing. Our co-parenting relationship, already strained, fractured irrevocably in that moment. The trust was shattered beyond repair.
I looked at her, devastated, recognizing that for her, the collapse of her career and her carefully built illusion was a greater tragedy than the abuse Finn had suffered. The victory I had just secured felt hollow, tainted by her pain and her misplaced anger. I had saved Finn, but I had permanently lost Chloe. The cost of protecting my son was, indeed, immense.
