The final court hearing began with a palpable sense of gravity. The courtroom was packed, the media having caught wind of the escalating drama. Penelope sat stiffly beside Atty. Vance, her face pale, her gaze avoiding mine. I sat with Atty. Cruz, Maria beside me, Leo and Lena a few rows back with Aunt Rosa. Their presence fortified me.

Atty. Cruz began by calling me to the stand. My heart pounded, but I knew what I had to do. This wasn’t just about me anymore; it was about Maria, my children, and even Julian.

“Mr. Lim,” Atty. Cruz began, his voice clear and measured, “can you describe your financial situation prior to your marriage to Penelope Albright?”

I took a deep breath. “I was struggling,” I admitted, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. “I had student loan debt, and I was working a low-paying job. I came from a modest background. I had ambition, but little means.”

“And when you met Penelope, what promises were made to you by her family?” Atty. Cruz pressed gently.

“They offered me a path,” I explained, meeting the judge’s gaze. “A way out of my financial anxiety. They promised a stable career within their family’s enterprises, a life free from worry, if I committed to Penelope. They made it clear that marrying into their family meant adhering to certain… expectations.”

A murmur rippled through the courtroom. I saw Penelope flinch, her jaw tightening. This was the first time I had ever publicly acknowledged the conditional nature of my own entry into her world. It echoed Maria’s own story, a stark parallel of financial pressure used to control personal choices.

“These expectations,” Atty. Cruz continued, “did they include severing ties with your past relationship with Maria Santos?”

I swallowed hard. “Yes. It was made very clear that my past was to be… tidied up. Penelope herself often spoke of a ‘clean slate’ for our future.”

Atty. Cruz then shifted his focus, presenting financial documents that highlighted the immense, almost incomprehensible wealth of Penelope’s family. But then, he unveiled a bombshell.

“Your Honor, we have uncovered evidence regarding the true nature of the Albright family fortune,” Atty. Cruz announced, holding up a thick dossier. “It is not, as widely believed, a simple inheritance. The bulk of their wealth is held in a highly restrictive trust, established by Penelope’s great-grandfather. This trust is contingent upon the direct descendants, including Penelope, maintaining an unblemished public image. Any scandal, any stain on the family name, can result in the forfeiture of substantial assets and even control of the trust.”

The courtroom erupted. This was a revelation of monumental proportions. Penelope’s entire facade, her desperation to control the narrative, her ruthless efforts to hide my past and Maria’s existence, suddenly made horrifying sense. It wasn’t just about ego or status; it was about maintaining her family’s entire financial empire. My “scandalous” past with Maria wasn’t just an embarrassment; it was a direct threat to her wealth.

Penelope’s face was ashen, her eyes wide with terror. She whispered frantically to Atty. Vance, who looked increasingly uncomfortable.

“So, Ms. Albright’s extreme measures to suppress the truth were not just about personal pride, but about preserving her access to the family fortune?” Atty. Cruz asked rhetorically, his gaze sweeping the room.

He then called a new witness to the stand: a former secretary from the Albright family’s legal firm, who had been contacted by Atty. Cruz. She was nervous, her voice barely a squeak.

“Ms. Albright,” Atty. Cruz asked the witness, “did you ever observe Penelope Albright attempting to influence documents or statements related to David Lim’s past relationship?”

The secretary hesitated, her eyes darting nervously towards Penelope. “I… I was told to draft several versions of an agreement,” she stammered, “concerning Ms. Santos. And I was asked to… backdate some correspondence.”

Penelope suddenly rose from her seat, her voice shrill. “This is outrageous! She’s lying! She was fired for incompetence!”

The judge banged his gavel, his patience clearly wearing thin. “Ms. Albright, one more outburst and I will have you removed.”

Atty. Vance put a restraining hand on Penelope’s arm, but Penelope shrugged her off. She leaned towards the witness, her eyes blazing with menace. “You will retract that, you understand? Or you will never work in this town again!”

It was a blatant attempt to suborn perjury, right there in the courtroom. Atty. Vance closed her eyes, a muscle ticking in her jaw. The line had been crossed.

A tense silence fell. Then, Atty. Eleanor Vance, Penelope’s own lawyer, stood up. Her movements were slow, deliberate. She walked to the judge’s bench, not to make an objection, but to hand him a single sheet of paper.

“Your Honor,” Atty. Vance said, her voice quiet, firm, devoid of any emotion. “I cannot, in good conscience, continue to represent Ms. Albright. And I have a document that I believe the court needs to see immediately.”

Penelope gasped, her eyes fixed on her lawyer, a look of pure, unadulterated horror dawning on her face. “Eleanor, no! You can’t!”

Atty. Vance ignored her. The judge took the paper, his brows furrowed as he read it. His expression shifted from curiosity to shock, then to a grim, steely resolve.

“Ms. Vance,” the judge asked, his voice low, “can you verify the authenticity of this document?”

“Yes, Your Honor,” she replied. “It is an original, un-notarized agreement drafted at Ms. Albright’s instruction, thirteen years ago. My firm kept a copy in an archived file, which I only recently discovered while reviewing Ms. Albright’s case materials.”

The judge then read aloud, his voice resonating through the hushed courtroom. “This document, signed by Penelope Albright, explicitly states that ‘Penelope Albright shall personally ensure Maria Santos receives no further financial support if David Lim elects to leave Maria Santos and marry Penelope Albright.’ It then details Ms. Albright’s personal commitment to sever all contact between Mr. Lim and Ms. Santos, and any future children.”

A collective intake of breath. This was the smoking gun. Not only did it prove Penelope’s direct and malicious interference, but it also directly contradicted the forged document she had presented earlier, the one supposedly signed by Maria. The judge held up the two documents, one the original, explicitly outlining Penelope’s malicious intent, the other, the forged one, designed to pin the blame on Maria. The signatures were starkly different.

Penelope stared at the document in the judge’s hand, then at Atty. Vance, who now stood with an unshakeable, ethical resolve. Her eyes were wide, her mouth agape. She had been betrayed, not by me, but by her own lawyer, by her own past actions.

The judge’s gaze, when it landed on Penelope, was devoid of any mercy. “Ms. Albright,” he stated, his voice ringing with authority, “this court finds compelling evidence of malicious interference, coercion, and attempted forgery. This is a blatant attempt to defraud the court and obstruct justice. The proceedings are immediately suspended. I am ordering your immediate arrest and referral to the District Attorney’s office for potential charges of perjury, obstruction of justice, and forgery. You will also be held liable for all legal costs and damages incurred by Ms. Santos and Mr. Lim.”

The gavel slammed down, echoing through the stunned silence. Penelope crumpled back into her chair, her face utterly defeated, the last vestige of her power and control completely stripped away. The hammer of truth had fallen, and it had crushed her.

After 13 years, my past caught up at a school competition – now my wealthy wife will lose everything.
