Chapter 11: The Bus Stop at Dawn

The library parking lot was almost deserted, the streetlights casting long, distorted shadows. A biting wind whipped through, carrying the scent of wet asphalt. I shivered, not just from the cold, but from the knot of anxiety that tightened in my chest. Aunt Clara’s car pulled up, its headlights cutting through the gloom.

I opened the passenger door, sliding in quickly. The interior was warm, smelling faintly of vanilla and paper. Clara offered a small, apologetic smile.

“Thanks for meeting me,” I said, rubbing my arms. “I got an eviction notice today. And my conservatory admission was suspended.”

Clara’s face hardened. “He’s desperate. And predictable. He tried to do the same to me, years ago. Cut off my access to our joint accounts, filed false claims about my spending.”

She reached into her large purse, pulling out a thick manila envelope. “This might help. I kept it safe, just in case.”

She handed me a stapled stack of papers. The top page was marked “CONFIDENTIAL – COURT FILING – DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS 2022.” Below that, the words: “AFFIDAVIT OF FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE – CLARA DANFORTH.”

My eyes scanned the dense legal text. Clara pointed to a specific paragraph. “Here. This details Julian’s hidden offshore accounts. The ones he used to funnel money out of his real estate projects, to avoid taxes, and to hide his true liabilities from investors.”

I read further down, my breath catching. The document explicitly stated that Julian had lied on previous financial disclosures, that his reported assets were inflated, and his debts were significantly higher than what he publicly declared. It even mentioned specific numbered accounts in the Cayman Islands.

“This proves he’s a liar,” I whispered, looking up at Clara. “It proves he’s been doing this for years.”

“Yes,” she confirmed. “I filed this during our divorce to protect myself. My lawyer advised me to keep detailed records of his fraudulent activities, just in case he tried to claim I was a reckless spender.”

“But… can I use this?” I asked, looking at the intimidating stack of papers. “It’s from your divorce. How does it help us?”

“It’s a sworn testimony, Maya,” she explained. “It’s legally binding. It’s a formal court record. It exposes Julian’s entire financial fraud operation, the real reason he’s always desperate for money. It proves he has a history of financial deceit and that he’s been hiding massive debts.”

My mind raced. This was the proof I needed, the smoking gun. But then the harsh reality hit me.

“I don’t have a lawyer,” I said, the words feeling heavy. “And I don’t have money to hire one. How can I use this in court if I can’t even afford to file a motion?”

Clara looked out into the dark parking lot, her expression troubled. “That’s the problem. Julian knows you don’t have resources. He uses that against everyone.”

A cold despair settled in. I held the crucial evidence in my hands, tangible proof of Julian’s deception, but it felt useless, locked behind a wall of legal fees I couldn’t climb. The paper rustled in my hands, a silent testament to power I couldn’t wield.
