Maya, why did Uncle Julian ask if I was ready to move to Florida without you?
The rhythmic rap on the apartment door was sharp, insistent. It was still early morning, the light outside thin and gray. My heart hammered against my ribs. This was it.
I opened the door, my hand gripping the cold metal knob. Julian stood on our small landing, impeccably dressed in a dark suit, his face a mask of solemn concern. Behind him stood a woman with a stern, professional demeanor, clutching a clipboard—the CPS caseworker. Next to her, Officer Greg Henderson, his uniform crisp, his hand resting on his belt.
Julian offered a tight, sympathetic smile. “Maya, we didn’t want it to come to this.”
He held up a folded document. An interim custody order. My breath hitched. He wasn’t just threatening anymore; he was here to take Chloe.
The CPS caseworker, her name tag reading ‘Ms. Albright,’ stepped forward. “Ms. Danforth, we have an order for the temporary placement of Chloe Danforth into protective custody, pending a full evaluation of the environment.”
Officer Henderson remained silent, his gaze moving between Julian and me, a neutral observer bound by protocol. His presence felt like a physical weight in the small doorway.
“No,” I managed, my voice hoarse. “You can’t. I’m her guardian.”
Julian stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, condescending tone. “Maya, please. Don’t make this harder than it has to be. You’re upset, I understand. But Chloe needs stability. A real home. Not… this.” His gaze swept disparagingly around our small, modest apartment.
“I’m her home,” I shot back, my hand tightening on the doorframe. “You fabricated evidence, you lied to Ms. Reed, you lied to my grandmother. You stole our money!”
Ms. Albright’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Ms. Danforth, we’ve received reports detailing concerns about your well-being and your capacity to care for your sister. These reports are consistent across multiple sources.”
Julian stepped forward, almost blocking the doorway. His voice, though quiet, was edged with triumph. “Maya, I’m offering you one last chance. Let Chloe come with us quietly. No police involvement. She’ll go to a wonderful facility in Florida, a temporary placement until things stabilize. Otherwise, Officer Henderson will be forced to intervene.”
His eyes held a chilling satisfaction. He thought he had won. He thought he had cornered me, stripped me of every defense.
From inside the apartment, Chloe’s voice, small and sleepy, called out, “Maya? Who’s at the door?”
My heart clenched. She was awake. She was going to see all of this. I gripped the doorknob so hard my knuckles turned white, staring at Julian’s smug face, at the caseworker’s clipboard, at the silent officer. The threshold of our home felt like a battleground, and I was standing on the precipice of losing everything.
