Maya, why did Uncle Julian ask if I was ready to move to Florida without you?
The small living room felt impossibly crowded. Julian stood by the doorway, a look of faux concern plastered on his face as Ms. Albright and Officer Henderson moved further into the apartment. Chloe, drawn by the voices, had emerged from her bedroom, her eyes wide, clinging to my side.
“Chloe, sweetheart,” Julian said, his voice dripping with forced kindness. “Everything’s going to be alright. You’re just going to go on a little trip.”
Before Ms. Albright could respond, a new figure appeared in the open doorway. Aunt Clara. She held a large envelope, her face pale but determined.
Julian’s eyes widened, a flicker of panic crossing his features. “Clara? What are you doing here?”
Clara ignored him, her gaze fixed on Ms. Albright. “Ms. Albright, I have some information regarding Julian Danforth’s history of financial fraud and his motivations for seeking custody of these girls.”
She stepped forward, past Julian, and handed the envelope to the caseworker.
“This,” Clara said, her voice clear and steady, “is a letter Julian sent me during our divorce. It details his plan to liquidate his late brother’s estate for his own financial gain, even then.”
Ms. Albright’s eyebrows rose as she pulled out the folded papers. The top page was a handwritten letter, unmistakably Julian’s script. She then drew out another document, the sworn affidavit from Clara’s divorce, detailing Julian’s hidden offshore accounts and fraudulent disclosures.
As Ms. Albright began to read, her expression shifted from professional skepticism to grave concern. Julian made a strangled sound, reaching out as if to snatch the documents, but Officer Henderson subtly blocked his path.
Just then, Julian’s phone, which he had left on a nearby end table, vibrated violently. He snatched it up, his face a mix of fury and fear. He answered, barking, “What?”
His face went white. I could hear a tinny voice on the other end, urgent and distressed. “You’re fired, effective immediately, Julian. The firm just received a compliance audit trigger. Your hidden liabilities… it’s all exposed. Your accounts are frozen.”
Julian’s hand dropped, the phone slipping from his grasp to clatter on the carpet. His eyes darted around the room, from Clara to Ms. Albright, then to me, the color draining from his face. His carefully constructed facade shattered.
Suddenly, Chloe stepped forward, pulling a small, purple digital recorder from her backpack. It was her favorite toy, a gift from our dad. Her finger pressed a button, and a tinny, familiar voice filled the stunned silence.
“Listen, Chloe,” Julian’s voice, distorted but clear, echoed through the room. “You can’t tell Maya about the money. Not a word. Or I’ll have to send you away. To a foster home, far away. You wouldn’t want that, would you? Just tell them you want to live with me in Florida.”
The recording clicked off. The room plunged into a shocked silence. Ms. Albright’s jaw had dropped. Officer Henderson’s hand moved from his belt to his mouth, his eyes fixed on Julian. Julian himself stood frozen, his face a mask of utter defeat and rage. The small recorder, held tightly in Chloe’s hand, had just demolished his entire scheme.
