Evelyn’s voice soared, painting a flawless portrait of her supposed grief. “…Clara’s memory will forever be a beacon, guiding us through the darkness she left behind.”

Just as she reached for a handkerchief to dab at her dry eyes, the chapel’s main video projector, mounted high on the back wall, flickered.

A low murmur rippled through the congregation. Reverend Miller, standing beside Evelyn, frowned. Julian shifted, his gaze darting to the screen.

Evelyn, annoyed by the interruption, shot a quick, irritated glance at the projector. “Perhaps a power fluctuation,” she muttered, attempting to regain control. “As I was saying…”

But the projector didn’t just flicker. It clicked, whirred, and then sprang to life, bathing the entire front of the chapel in a bright, unwelcome light.

Instead of the serene tribute video Evelyn had meticulously prepared – a slideshow of my carefully curated “best moments” in the Gable family, designed to evoke sympathy and cement her narrative – a completely different image filled the screen.

It was Evelyn’s private study. Her prized Rothko painting, usually hanging prominently behind her antique mahogany desk, was swung open on its hidden hinges, revealing a dark, steel vault.

The crowd gasped. A collective intake of breath swept through the chapel. No one in Pine Hollow, not even Julian, knew about that vault. It was Evelyn’s most guarded secret.

On the large screen, Wayne Callahan stood calmly inside the study, his back to the camera, illuminated by the vault’s open door. He wasn’t alone. Two other men, large and unsmiling, flanked him. They were the same men I’d seen in the back row, Silas O’Rourke’s senior syndicate collectors. Their faces were grim, their presence radiating an undeniable authority.

Evelyn froze at the podium, her mouth slightly open, the handkerchief forgotten in her hand. Julian’s eyes widened in horror. Reverend Miller looked utterly bewildered, blinking at the screen.

Wayne turned to face the hidden camera, his face a mask of cold satisfaction. He held up a thick, leather-bound ledger. Evelyn’s secret ledger.

“Evelyn Gable,” Wayne’s voice, amplified by the chapel’s sound system, boomed through the sanctuary, cutting through the stunned silence. “This is Wayne Callahan. And you have a debt.”

The sheer audacity of it left everyone speechless. Evelyn’s face contorted, a mask of aristocratic grief dissolving into pure, unadulterated fury. She lunged for the microphone.

“Turn that off!” she shrieked, her carefully composed facade shattering completely. “This is an outrage! A hack! Julian, do something!”

But Julian was rooted to the spot, his face ashen. The two men from the back row were already moving, calmly walking down the aisle, their eyes fixed on Evelyn.

On the screen, one of O’Rourke’s collectors, a man with a scarred cheek, stepped forward, a stack of crisp, official-looking documents in his hand.

“The Pine Hollow Funeral Chapel,” he announced, his voice devoid of emotion, “is now witness to the settlement of Evelyn Gable’s outstanding liabilities to the O’Rourke Syndicate.”

He held up a document for the camera to clearly see. It was a promissory note. For $1.5 million. Signed by Evelyn Gable. The date on it was six months ago. The crowd, bewildered, began to murmur, confused whispers filling the air. This wasn’t a eulogy. This was an ambush.
