The morning light felt heavier, tainted by the bitter knowledge of Evelyn’s betrayal. Kien sat across from her at the breakfast table, mechanically stirring his coffee. He watched her sip her tea, serene and composed, utterly unaware that her meticulously constructed facade had crumbled.

He thought of the hidden messages, the cold calculations of his “emotional fragility.” A direct confrontation, impulsive and raw, would only confirm her assessment. It would be a weakness she could exploit, sealing his fate within Aetheris Tech.

His mind raced, a frantic search for a path forward. He needed access, more than what his current station provided. The company’s architecture was a labyrinth of restricted access and layered security. His current badge only granted him clearance to the memory-severance labs and the general engineering floor. To truly unravel Evelyn’s scheme, he needed to ascend.

“Are you feeling alright, Kien?” Evelyn asked, her gaze steady. “You seem… preoccupied.”

Kien managed a thin smile. “Just thinking about Project Chiron. Lot of pressure.”

He saw the flicker of approval in her eyes. Pressure was good. Pressure made him productive. He needed to play the part, to become the model employee she thought she controlled. To secure a promotion, which would unlock higher clearance levels. That was the only way to get closer to the core of the operation, the air-gapped servers where the full, unfiltered logs of her communication and his stolen work lay hidden.

But the thought of feigning ignorance, of continuing this charade, made his stomach clench. Every casual touch, every shared meal, would be a lie. Could he maintain the pretense? Or should he risk everything and confront her now, hoping to shock some truth out of her?

He poured himself another coffee, the steam warming his hands, but not the chill in his heart.
