Get this child and her mess out of my house before the campaign donors arrive, my mother-in-law Margaret barked, pointing a manicured finger at the dark red cranberry stain on her white antique rug.

Chapter 15: One Year Later

The press room at the Albany Capitol building buzzed with reporters. Evan Galloway, impeccably dressed in a dark suit, stood at the podium, flanked by his campaign manager, Mark, and a handful of junior staffers. He cleared his throat, adjusting the microphone. The television cameras flickered to life.

“Good morning,” Evan began, his voice projecting a confident, practiced tone. “I’m here today to reiterate my unwavering commitment to the constituents of the 14th District.”

He launched into his prepared remarks, a carefully crafted speech about fiscal responsibility and transparency in municipal governance. He spoke of streamlining budgets, cutting waste, and putting taxpayers first. He pointed to charts on the screen behind him, detailing his plans for economic growth.

Midway through his opening remarks, as he passionately denounced “dark money” in politics, the heavy double doors at the back of the room swung open. Two uniformed process servers, stern-faced and unsmiling, entered. Their presence immediately silenced the low murmur of the reporters.

They walked directly to the podium, their steps measured and deliberate. Evan, caught mid-sentence, faltered. He looked at his campaign manager, Mark, who suddenly looked pale, his eyes wide.

Without a word, one of the servers extended a crisp, white legal document towards Evan. The other held up a small video camera, recording the interaction.

Evan took the papers, his hand trembling slightly. He stared down at the bold black lettering.

“Mr. Evan Galloway,” the server stated, his voice clear and resonant, “you are hereby served with a subpoena for an immediate caucus deposition. Regarding allegations of falsified campaign disclosures and violations of state election finance laws.”

A flurry of camera flashes erupted, blinding Evan in their sudden, harsh glare. Reporters, usually passive during opening statements, surged forward, shouting questions.

“Mr. Galloway, are these allegations true?”

“What about the frozen funds?”

“Is this related to the Ellis family trust?”

Evan stood frozen at the podium, the subpoena clutched in his hand. His carefully constructed narrative of fiscal integrity was crumbling in front of the assembled press. Mark, his campaign manager, sidled away from the podium, his face grim, and silently walked off the floor, disappearing through a side door.

Evan looked up, his eyes darting across the room, searching for an ally, a friendly face. There were none. Only the hungry stares of the media, the relentless click of camera shutters, and the cold, unyielding legal papers in his hand. The words “immediate deposition” echoed in his ears, a death knell to his political aspirations.

Get this child and her mess out of my house before the campaign donors arrive, my mother-in-law Margaret barked, pointing a manicured finger at the dark red cranberry stain on her white antique rug.
