Chapter 12: A Year Later

Eleanor Abernathy was like a cornered viper. The media storm had broken, but instead of retreating, she struck back with brutal precision. The first sign was the official-looking envelope slid under the door of Gabriel’s safehouse.

It was an eviction notice. Not for the safehouse, but for my conservation studio, Montgomery & Associates. Forty-eight hours. The locks would be changed, my equipment impounded, and the lease terminated immediately for “breach of contract and outstanding financial obligations.”

My hands shook as I read it. Years of my life, my passion, my identity, reduced to this cold, legal language. A few hours later, my banking apps showed a zero balance for my business accounts, and my personal accounts were frozen. “Emergency court injunction,” the digital notification read, citing “potential financial misconduct” and “endangerment of family assets.”

Eleanor wasn’t just defending her reputation; she was tearing mine down, piece by painful piece.

“She’s isolating you,” Gabriel said, his voice quiet, as he scanned the documents. “Cutting off your resources. Making you look unstable.”

He led me through the spare, functional rooms of the safehouse. It was a simple two-bedroom apartment, clean but devoid of any personal touches. This was where we would live, where Leo would be safe, for now. He was playing with some new toys in the living room, still mostly silent, but occasionally giggling at something on the small TV.

I walked to the window, staring out at the unfamiliar street below. My studio, my tools, my history, all gone. A hollow ache spread through my chest, but beneath it, a fierce, burning anger.

“She thinks she’s breaking me,” I said, my voice barely a whisper, yet firm. I turned from the window, my jaw set. “She thinks she can strip me of everything and I’ll just disappear. But I still have the evidence, Gabriel. I still have the truth.”

Gabriel nodded, a flicker of approval in his eyes. “And she still has a reputation. An empire built on lies. We hit her where it hurts most, Clara. We destroy that reputation, permanently. From here.”

Penniless, but armed with the truth, I knew my fight was far from over. It had just moved to a new, more desolate battlefield.
