You are just a clinical assistant, Mom, so please don't ruin my moment, my twenty-five-year-old son Brandon whispered, snatching my VIP seat passes out of my coat pocket.

Chapter 10: Two Years Later

The night of the St. Jude Medical Foundation Gala descended upon the Drake Hotel like a shimmering cloak. The grand ballroom glittered under crystal chandeliers, a symphony of hushed conversations and clinking glasses already in progress. Outside, a line of luxury cars snaked up to the valet, depositing guests onto the red carpet.

I watched it all from a discrete distance, tucked into a quiet corner of the hotel’s lobby, far from the entrance. Julian stood beside me, his hand resting lightly on my back.

Brandon and Chloe arrived in a gleaming black limousine, stepping out with practiced smiles. Chloe’s emerald gown shimmered as she linked her arm through Brandon’s. He looked impeccably handsome in a tailored suit, a picture of successful ambition.

Aunt Beatrice and Uncle Thomas were already waiting for them near the entrance, their faces etched with pride and concern. Aunt Beatrice fussed with Brandon’s lapel.

“Such a shame Eleanor isn’t here,” I heard Aunt Beatrice say, her voice carrying across the polished marble. “Brandon, dear, are you sure she isn’t coming?”

Brandon sighed dramatically, shaking his head. “She refused, Aunt Beatrice. Said she had ‘other commitments.’ Too embarrassed, I suppose, after everything.” He glanced pointedly at Chloe, who squeezed his arm sympathetically.

“She always was so career-focused,” Uncle Thomas muttered, shaking his head. “Never put family first.”

They walked into the ballroom together, a picture of familial solidarity, completely unaware that their “estranged” relative was watching from the shadows. Brandon’s chest seemed puffed out with triumph, clearly believing he had successfully isolated me and claimed his victory.

Inside the private green room, away from the glittering crowd, Dean Arthur Pendelton adjusted his bow tie. He looked at his watch, a slight smile on his face. He checked the microphone one last time, making sure everything was perfect.

He glanced at the empty seat reserved for his honored guest, the anonymous benefactor, the keynote speaker. The clock was ticking down to the moment when St. Jude Medical Center would reveal its most generous supporter. The moment Brandon Reynolds thought would usher him into a new era of prestige.

The air in the ballroom crackled with anticipation. The orchestral quartet paused, and the stage lights brightened. Brandon and Chloe, seated at a prominent table near the front, exchanged triumphant glances. Aunt Beatrice and Uncle Thomas beamed, ready to witness what they believed would be Brandon’s shining moment. They had no idea the truth that was about to unfold.

You are just a clinical assistant, Mom, so please don't ruin my moment, my twenty-five-year-old son Brandon whispered, snatching my VIP seat passes out of my coat pocket.
